Access to HE Entry Requirements

Find out the entry requirements for Access to HE diplomas. Open to adults 18+ with a good standard of English and the motivation to succeed.

Who Can Study Access to HE?

Access to HE is open to adults aged 19 or over who can demonstrate readiness for Level 3 academic study.

There is no requirement to hold specific prior qualifications to enrol – what matters is your motivation, your ability to engage with academic reading and writing, and your commitment to completing the programme. You will be asked to demonstrate a baseline level of English literacy as part of the enrolment process, and you should be clear about which university course and subject area you are aiming towards, since this determines which Access to HE pathway is right for you.

Many of our students come from diverse backgrounds – some have GCSEs, others have vocational qualifications, and others have years of relevant work experience that has built equivalent knowledge. What every successful student shares is a genuine commitment to academic study and a clear goal to progress to higher education.

✓ Have access to a computer, tablet, or laptop and a reliable internet connection

✓ Are motivated to work independently and meet assignment deadlines across 9–12 months

→ Things to Consider Before Applying

→ If English is not your first language, you may be asked to demonstrate an equivalent level of English literacy before enrolment is confirmed

→ If you are currently enrolled at another college or university, check whether simultaneous enrolment is permitted under your existing arrangements

→ Some university courses – particularly healthcare programmes – have additional entry requirements beyond the Access to HE Diploma, such as DBS checks, occupational health clearance, or GCSE Mathematics and English at grade C/4 or above. You should research your target course's full requirements early

How to Apply: Step by Step

1
Research Your Pathway and University Goal

Before you apply, spend some time identifying which university courses interest you and which Access to HE pathway aligns with those courses. For example, if you want to study Adult Nursing, you should enrol on the Access to HE: Health Studies or Nursing pathway. This alignment is important because universities will check that your diploma subject matches the degree you are applying for. Reviewing two or three target university course pages on UCAS will help you confirm which pathway is most appropriate.

2
Complete and Submit Your Enrolment Form

Fill in the online enrolment form, providing your personal details, details of any previous qualifications, and your chosen pathway. You will also be asked to write a short paragraph about your reasons for wanting to study the programme and your intended university destination. This is not assessed academically – it simply helps our team confirm the pathway is the right match for you. The form takes approximately 15–20 minutes to complete.

3
Initial Assessment and Pathway Confirmation

After submitting your form, you may be invited to complete a short initial assessment. This typically involves a brief written task designed to give our tutors a sense of your current literacy level and to ensure that the programme you have chosen is appropriate. The assessment is supportive rather than selective – its purpose is to make sure you are set up for success. If any concerns arise from the assessment, our admissions team will discuss options with you.

4
Receive Your Offer and Confirm Your Place

Once your application has been reviewed and your pathway confirmed, you will receive a formal offer of a place on the programme. You will then be asked to confirm your enrolment by paying your course fees or arranging any applicable funding. New cohorts begin on set start dates throughout the year, so you should confirm your place promptly to secure your preferred start date. Our team will send you a full induction pack with everything you need to get started.

5
Complete Your Induction and Begin Studying

Your induction period introduces you to the online learning environment, the assessment framework, your personal tutor, and the support services available to you. This is a crucial few weeks that sets the foundation for everything that follows. You will learn how assignments are structured, how marks and grades work, and what resources are available to help you succeed. By the end of induction, you will have completed your first unit task and will be on your way to earning your diploma.

Entry Requirements: Your Questions Answered

There is no mandatory GCSE requirement to enrol on Access to HE. The diploma is designed to be accessible to adults who may not have completed traditional academic qualifications, and enrolment decisions are based on an assessment of readiness for Level 3 study rather than on a checklist of prior certificates. That said, it is worth noting that some university courses you may want to progress to – particularly nursing, midwifery, and other NHS-regulated programmes – do require GCSE Mathematics and English at grade C/4 or above. Checking the entry requirements for your target university courses is strongly recommended before you begin the diploma.
You need to be able to read, write, and communicate confidently in English at approximately GCSE level – broadly equivalent to a grade C/4 – in order to study the diploma effectively. This is because all course materials, assignments, and academic reading are in English, and your assessed work must be clearly written in English. If English is your second language and you are unsure whether your level is sufficient, our admissions team can discuss your situation and, if needed, suggest preparatory steps. We do not set a formal English language test score threshold, but we do want to ensure you can engage meaningfully with the content before you enrol.
Yes – Access to HE is designed for adults, and you must be aged 19 or over at the time of enrolment. There is no upper age limit; students in their 40s, 50s, and beyond complete the diploma successfully every year. The programme is not suitable for 16–18 year olds, who have other Level 3 qualification routes such as A-Levels or BTECs available to them. If you are 18 and planning to turn 19 before the programme starts, our admissions team can advise on your options.
Yes – we are committed to making the programme accessible to all learners, including those with disabilities, learning differences such as dyslexia or ADHD, or mental health conditions. You can declare any support needs on your application form, and our student support team will work with you to put appropriate adjustments in place before you begin studying. This might include extended assignment deadlines, alternative format materials, or additional tutor contact. All reasonable adjustments are made in line with the Equality Act 2010 to ensure you have a fair opportunity to demonstrate your abilities.
The best way to identify the right pathway is to start with your intended university degree and work backwards. Look at two or three universities offering the degree you want, and check what Access to HE pathway or subject they specify as an acceptable entry qualification. Most universities are specific: for example, they may require an Access to HE Diploma with a healthcare or science focus for a nursing degree. Our admissions team can also guide you through this process if you are unsure – it is one of the most common questions we receive, and we are very happy to help you get it right from the start.
Yes – many of our students work full-time while studying for their Access to HE Diploma. The programme is designed for exactly this scenario: it is fully online, self-paced within the cohort structure, and there are no fixed lecture times or attendance requirements. Most full-time workers study in the evenings and at weekends, dedicating between 15 and 20 hours per week to their studies. Good planning and consistent study habits are the most important factors for success when balancing work and study, and our tutors are experienced in supporting working learners.
We have multiple intake dates throughout the year, and in many cases you can start within a few weeks of your application being approved. The exact timeline depends on the start date of the next available cohort and how quickly your enrolment process is completed. If you submit your application well in advance of a start date, our team will confirm your place and send you induction materials ahead of your first day. We recommend applying at least 2–4 weeks before your preferred start date to allow time for any necessary assessments and administrative steps.
