About This Course

The A-Level History including exams offered through learndirect is a full, Ofqual-regulated A-Level qualification set and assessed by AQA, one of the UK's largest and most respected awarding bodies. It covers four distinct components: an introduction to historical study and source work; British history from the era of industrialisation and social reform; the turbulent history of Weimar Germany and the rise of National Socialism; and a Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) – a historical investigation on a topic of your choice. Together, these components develop the full range of skills examined at A-Level: thematic analysis, cause and consequence, historical interpretation, and extended independent research.

The Industrialisation and the People: Britain, c1783–1885 component takes learners through one of the most transformative periods in British and world history – the age of the Industrial Revolution, Chartism, parliamentary reform, and the emergence of a modern urban society. You will analyse the forces that drove economic and social change in Britain, assess the impact of industrialisation on working people, and evaluate the political responses that shaped Victorian society.

The Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918–1945 component examines the collapse of the Weimar Republic, the conditions that allowed the rise of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist German Workers' Party, the consolidation of Nazi power, the ideology and terror of the Third Reich, and the catastrophic trajectory of Germany from 1933 to 1945. This is one of the most studied and debated periods in modern European history, and the component develops sophisticated analytical skills through engagement with historiographical debate and primary evidence.

The Historical Investigation is a non-examined assessment in which you pursue independent historical research on a topic outside the scope of the taught components. Under the guidance of your tutor, you develop a historical question, gather and interrogate sources, construct a sustained analytical argument, and present your findings in an extended piece of historical writing. This component rewards original thinking, source criticism, and the ability to construct and sustain a coherent argument – skills that are highly valued in higher education and professional life.

Exam entry is included in the course fee, meaning learners do not face additional costs to sit their AQA examinations. Learndirect will guide you through the process of locating and registering at an approved exam centre. All external examinations are set and marked by AQA. The qualification is graded A*–E and earns UCAS points, making it fully equivalent to an A-Level taken at school or college. This course is appropriate for learners returning to education after a gap, those who were unable to study A-Level History at school, and working adults who need the flexibility of online study to achieve a university entrance qualification.

What You'll Study

The AQA A-Level History course covers three examined components and one Non-Examined Assessment (NEA). The components span British industrialisation and social change, the rise and fall of Nazi Germany, and an independent historical investigation developed with your tutor.

3 exams + NEAAQA specificationExams includedUCAS points awarded
1Introduction to History

Develop the foundational knowledge, skills, and habits of mind that underpin success at A-Level and beyond. This introductory component provides learners with the conceptual and methodological grounding needed to engage with the AQA A-Level History specification at the required level. You will develop an understanding of the key second-order concepts that frame historical enquiry – causation, consequence, change and continuity, similarity and difference, and significance – and learn how these concepts are applied in examination questions and extended essays. The component introduces you to the practice of historical source analysis: how historians evaluate the provenance, content, tone, and limitation of primary sources; how to construct arguments based on evidence rather than assertion; and how to engage critically with the interpretations of other historians. You will also develop your essay writing skills, learning how to structure a sustained analytical argument, use evidence effectively, and reach supported judgements. For learners who have not studied History at GCSE level, or who completed their previous studies some time ago, this introductory phase provides an essential bridge into the rigour demanded at A-Level. For those with existing experience of historical study, it provides an opportunity to sharpen and consolidate the analytical skills that will be tested across all three examined papers.

2Industrialisation and the People: Britain, c1783–1885

Examine one of the most dramatic and contested periods in British history – the age of industrial transformation, urban growth, political reform, and social upheaval that reshaped British society between the late eighteenth century and the 1880s. This component develops your understanding of the causes, nature, and consequences of industrialisation in Britain: the shift from agrarian to industrial economy, the role of technological innovation, the development of the factory system, and the emergence of a new urban working class. You will analyse the political and social responses to industrialisation, tracing the arc from the Luddite disturbances and the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 through the Reform Acts of 1832 and 1867 to the Chartist movement and the rise of trade unionism. The experiences of working people are examined in detail: living and working conditions in industrial towns, child labour, public health crises, and the gradual emergence of social reform legislation. The role of figures including Jeremy Bentham, Edwin Chadwick, and Robert Owen in shaping the political response to industrial conditions is assessed alongside the broader ideological debates between laissez-faire and state intervention that defined Victorian political thought. Exam preparation focuses on the analytical essay and interpretations questions that test this content in the AQA external examinations.

3Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918–1945

Explore in depth the history of Germany from the collapse of the Second Reich in 1918 through the failure of the Weimar Republic, the rise and consolidation of National Socialism, the terror of the Nazi state, and the catastrophic outcome of the Third Reich. This component is one of the most studied and historiographically rich in the A-Level History curriculum. You will examine the circumstances in which the Weimar Republic was created, the political, economic, and social instability of the early 1920s, and the period of relative stabilisation under Stresemann before the Depression shattered Germany's fragile democracy. The rise of the NSDAP under Adolf Hitler is examined in detail: the electoral strategies and propaganda techniques of the Nazi movement; the political miscalculations of conservative elites who sought to use Hitler; the events of January 1933 and the rapid consolidation of totalitarian power that followed. The nature of the Nazi state is examined through the lens of recent historiographical debate, considering the polycratic structure of the regime, the role of ideology and race in policy-making, the machinery of terror, and the extent of popular consent or coercion. The component concludes with a study of Germany at war, the Holocaust, and the destruction of the Third Reich. Exam preparation equips learners to handle both analytical essay questions and the challenging interpretations paper that requires engagement with the views of named historians.

4Historical Investigation (Non-Examined Assessment)

Complete an independent historical investigation on a topic of your choice, under the guidance of your personal tutor. The Historical Investigation (NEA) is a non-examined assessment that is set and marked internally, then moderated by AQA. It requires you to identify a historical question, gather and critically evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources, construct a sustained analytical argument, and present your conclusions in an extended piece of writing of around 3,500 words. The NEA is your opportunity to pursue an aspect of history that genuinely interests you – whether that is a local history topic, a period or region not covered in the taught components, or a question that arises from your wider reading. The key requirement is that the topic must be sufficiently distinct from the content of the examined papers. Your tutor will support you in developing a viable question, identifying appropriate sources, structuring your argument, and meeting the AQA assessment criteria. The investigation rewards independent thinking, source criticism, and the ability to engage with historical debate at a sophisticated level. It is the component that most closely resembles the kind of extended research writing you will encounter at undergraduate level, and it is often the part of the A-Level that learners find most personally rewarding.

Yes. AQA is one of the UK's principal Ofqual-regulated awarding bodies, and AQA A-Level History is recognised and accepted by all UK universities as a Level 3 academic qualification for university entry purposes. It is graded on the standard A*–E scale and earns UCAS points identical to an A-Level taken at a school or sixth form college. History is also classified as a facilitating subject by the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, meaning it is particularly well-regarded for applications to a broad range of degree programmes.

The AQA A-Level History specification studied through learndirect covers: an introductory phase developing core historical skills and source analysis; a breadth study of Industrialisation and the People: Britain, c1783–1885, examining the causes and consequences of industrial transformation and political reform; a depth study of Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918–1945, tracing the collapse of the Weimar Republic, the rise of National Socialism, the nature of the Nazi state, and the course of World War Two in Germany; and a Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) in which you pursue independent historical research on a topic of your choice.

Most learners complete their AQA A-Level History through learndirect within 18 to 24 months, studying at a self-directed pace. The course has no fixed timetable, meaning you can accelerate your study if your circumstances allow or take longer if you need more time. A-Level History requires a substantial commitment of reading, essay writing, and research – particularly for the NEA – and learners who can dedicate regular blocks of study time each week will progress most effectively. You must complete both examined papers and the NEA to be awarded the full A-Level.

Yes. AQA A-Level History requires two external examination papers sat in person at an approved AQA exam centre. The exams cannot be taken online. Approved exam centres are available throughout the UK, including many schools and colleges that accept private candidates. Learndirect provides guidance on identifying and registering at your nearest approved centre when you are ready to sit your examinations. Exam entry fees are included in the course price and you will not be asked to pay separately for examination registration.

The Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) is a Historical Investigation in which you independently research a historical question of your choice and present your findings in an extended piece of analytical writing of approximately 3,500 words. The NEA contributes 20% of the overall A-Level grade and is marked internally by your tutor before being moderated by AQA. Your tutor will support you in choosing a viable question, identifying appropriate primary and secondary sources, structuring your argument, and meeting the AQA assessment criteria. The NEA must cover a topic that is sufficiently distinct from the content of the two examined components.

No prior qualifications in History are required to enrol. The course begins with an introductory phase that develops the core analytical, essay writing, and source evaluation skills needed for A-Level study, making it accessible to learners who did not study History at GCSE or who completed their previous studies some time ago. However, a good standard of written English is important, as A-Level History is a highly literacy-intensive qualification – all assessment, including the external examinations, is in written essay form. GCSE English Language at grade 4 or above is strongly recommended.

Yes – online A-Level study through learndirect is particularly well-suited to adult learners returning to education. There is no upper age limit for enrolment, no minimum attendance requirement, and no fixed study schedule. You study through the online platform at times that fit around work, family, and other commitments. The self-paced model means you can progress as quickly or slowly as your circumstances allow. Many learndirect learners study A-Levels in their twenties, thirties, or beyond, using them to access university as mature students or to demonstrate academic aptitude for career progression purposes.

AQA A-Level History earns UCAS points on the standard A-Level tariff: A* = 56 points, A = 48 points, B = 40 points, C = 32 points, D = 24 points, E = 16 points. These are identical to the UCAS points awarded for an A-Level in History taken at a school or college, and are combined with your other qualifications when UCAS calculates your total tariff score for university applications. History is a widely required or preferred subject for many arts, humanities, and social science degree programmes, and is recognised as a facilitating subject by the Russell Group.

The Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918–1945 depth study is one of the two externally examined components, contributing 40% of the overall A-Level grade. It is examined in Paper 2, a 2-hour 30-minute paper consisting of two sections. Section A requires you to analyse and evaluate two extracts from historical interpretations of the period, demonstrating your ability to engage with historiographical debate. Section B presents a choice of essay questions requiring sustained analytical argument on key aspects of the Weimar Republic and the Nazi state. The component covers the creation and instability of Weimar Germany, the rise of the Nazi Party, the consolidation of power in 1933–34, the ideology and terror of the Third Reich, the conduct of racial policy, and Germany at war.

From the day you enrol, you will be assigned a dedicated personal tutor with expertise in AQA A-Level History. Your tutor marks and provides written feedback on all submitted essays and assignments, advises you on exam technique for the specific question types tested in AQA History papers, and supports you through all stages of your NEA historical investigation – from choosing a topic and question to finalising your submission. Hear From Our Learners

I left school without A-Levels and spent years feeling it was too late to go to university. Studying A-Level History with learndirect changed that completely. My tutor was incredibly knowledgeable – her feedback on my essays transformed how I argue and structure my writing. I passed with a B and I'm starting my History degree in September.

Claire D.

A-Level History including exams (AQA)

The Germany 1918–1945 unit was everything I hoped it would be. I'd always been fascinated by the period but never had the chance to study it properly. The depth of the content and the way the tutor helped me engage with different historians' interpretations made it genuinely exciting. The NEA was challenging but hugely rewarding – I chose to research the German Home Front and loved every part of it.

Owen B.

A-Level History including exams (AQA)

As a working professional studying in the evenings, the flexibility of the online platform was essential. I could fit study around a demanding job and still make consistent progress. The fact that exam entry was included meant there were no nasty surprises on costs. I'm delighted with my result – an A, which I genuinely didn't think was possible at my age. Would recommend learndirect to anyone.
