About This Course

The GCSE English Language and Mathematics Bundle (including Exams) from Learnirect gives adult learners the opportunity to achieve two of the UK's most important qualifications in a single, cost-effective online package. Both subjects are awarded by Pearson Edexcel, one of the UK's leading awarding bodies for GCSEs and international qualifications, and the certificates are identical to those earned by students in schools and colleges across England.

GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics are the two qualifications most frequently required for entry to university, professional training programmes, apprenticeships, and a wide range of employment. Universities and colleges across the UK routinely specify grade 4 (standard pass) or grade 5 (strong pass) in both subjects as a minimum entry requirement. For nursing, teaching, social work, engineering, and many other careers, there is simply no substitute for holding both GCSEs at the required grade. This bundle allows you to address both requirements simultaneously, under a single enrolment, with a dedicated support team guiding you through both subjects.

The Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language specification (Code: 1EN0) develops reading, writing, spoken language, and analytical skills through a range of texts and writing tasks. The assessment model includes two written examination papers covering reading comprehension and extended writing, plus a spoken language endorsement that is reported separately on the certificate. The Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics specification (Code: 1MA1) covers five content domains: number, algebra, ratio, geometry and measures, and probability and statistics, and is assessed by three written papers — one non-calculator and two calculator papers.

Both qualifications are delivered online through Learnirect's structured virtual learning environment. You will have a dedicated personal tutor for each subject who will set formative assessments, provide detailed written feedback, and develop your exam technique in line with the Pearson Edexcel mark schemes. Exam entry for both subjects is included in the bundle price. We will help you register with an approved external exam centre and plan your sitting dates for the May/June exam series, or other available series depending on the subject and your timeline.

This bundle is particularly well suited to adult learners who need both qualifications for a specific purpose — such as a university conditional offer, a nursing or teaching application, or an apprenticeship requirement — and who want to study efficiently without managing two separate enrolments. It is also ideal for school leavers who did not achieve the required grades first time and want a structured resit programme that covers both subjects comprehensively.

What You'll Study

This bundle covers two complete GCSE qualifications. The English Language modules develop reading, writing, and language analysis skills. The Mathematics modules cover all five content domains of the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Maths specification.

Level English LanguageGCSE English Language – Pearson Edexcel (1EN0)

EL01Reading: Fiction and Literary Non-Fiction

Develop the close reading and analytical skills needed to engage with literary fiction and literary non-fiction texts at GCSE level. This module introduces the key reading assessment objectives: identifying explicit and implicit information, summarising and synthesising across texts, explaining the language choices writers make, and evaluating how writers achieve specific effects on the reader. You practise reading a range of unseen literary texts — including novel extracts, short stories, and literary essays — and learn how to structure analytical responses that demonstrate genuine textual engagement rather than surface-level description. Timing and planning strategies for the reading section of Paper 1 are developed throughout.

EL02Reading: Non-Fiction and Transactional Writing

Build the reading skills required to tackle non-fiction texts on Paper 2, which draws on texts from different time periods and perspectives. This module covers the analysis of non-fiction genres including news articles, travel writing, letters, speeches, and opinion pieces, with a focus on how purpose, audience, and context shape language choices. You develop skills in comparing texts — identifying similarities and differences in perspective, argument, and language — and learn how to structure comparative responses within the time constraints of the examination. Transactional writing skills for Paper 2 are also introduced, covering the conventions of writing to argue, persuade, advise, and inform.

EL03Writing: Descriptive and Narrative Writing

Develop the creative writing skills assessed in Paper 1, Section B. This module teaches the techniques of effective narrative and descriptive writing — structuring a story arc, developing character and voice, creating atmosphere through precise language choices, deploying figurative language for effect, and varying sentence structure for impact. You study examples of high-grade student responses and published creative writing to understand what distinguishes a grade 7–9 response from a grade 4–5 answer. You practise drafting and refining extended writing responses, developing the ability to plan, write, and check a complete response under timed conditions.

EL04Writing: Transactional and Persuasive Writing

Master the non-fiction writing skills assessed in Paper 2, Section B. This module covers the full range of transactional text types that may appear on the examination: letters (formal and informal), speeches, newspaper and magazine articles, reports, and reviews. For each genre you study the conventions of form, audience awareness, register, and tone, and practise organising ideas in a structured, persuasive manner. Particular attention is given to rhetorical techniques including direct address, tricolon, anaphora, and counterargument, which characterise the most effective persuasive and argumentative writing at GCSE level. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPaG) are embedded throughout.

EL05Spoken Language Endorsement

Prepare for the spoken language component of the Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language, which is assessed separately and reported as a Pass, Merit, or Distinction on your certificate. This module covers the requirements of a solo spoken language presentation, including choosing an appropriate topic, structuring an argument for a live audience, responding to questions, and demonstrating the standard English spoken language skills expected at GCSE level. While the spoken endorsement does not contribute numerically to your grade, it is recorded on your certificate and is valued by some universities and employers. Your tutor will guide you through the preparation and recording process.

Level MathematicsGCSE Mathematics – Pearson Edexcel (1MA1)

MA01Number

Establish a secure command of number — the foundational content domain of the GCSE Maths specification. This module covers integers and the number system, place value, ordering, and rounding; the four operations with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions; percentages, percentage change, and reverse percentage; powers, roots, and index laws; prime factorisation, highest common factor, and lowest common multiple; standard form; surds at Higher tier; and the application of number skills to real-life contexts including finance, measurement, and proportion. Particular emphasis is placed on calculator and non-calculator methods, as the Paper 1 non-calculator paper tests number skills directly without the support of a calculator.

MA02Algebra

Develop fluency in the algebraic skills that underpin a significant proportion of the GCSE Maths examination. This module covers simplifying expressions and collecting like terms; expanding single and double brackets; factorising; solving linear equations and inequalities; forming and solving equations from worded problems; substitution; sequences and the nth term; coordinates and straight-line graphs, including gradient and intercept; quadratic expressions and equations, including factorising, the quadratic formula, and completing the square at Higher tier; simultaneous equations; and the interpretation of algebraic and graphical models. Algebra questions appear on all three examination papers, making this the highest-priority content domain for exam preparation.

MA03Ratio, Proportion, and Rates of Change

Build the proportional reasoning skills that connect number, algebra, and real-world applications throughout the GCSE specification. This module covers simplifying and working with ratios; dividing quantities in a given ratio; direct and inverse proportion; the use of multiplicative reasoning in percentage and interest calculations; compound measures including speed, density, and pressure; scale factors and similarity; the relationship between lengths, areas, and volumes of similar shapes; and graphical representations of proportional relationships. Ratio and proportion questions are embedded across all three papers and often appear in multi-step problem-solving contexts that test mathematical reasoning as well as calculation.

MA04Geometry and Measures

Develop the spatial reasoning and geometric knowledge that form one of the largest content domains of the GCSE specification. This module covers properties of 2D and 3D shapes; perimeter, area, and volume calculations including circles, sectors, prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres; angle rules including parallel lines, polygons, and circle theorems at Higher tier; transformations including reflection, rotation, translation, and enlargement; vectors; Pythagoras' theorem; trigonometry in right-angled triangles and the sine and cosine rules at Higher tier; construction and loci; and the use of compound measures in geometric contexts. Geometry questions account for a substantial portion of marks across all three papers.

MA05Probability and Statistics

Develop the data handling and probabilistic reasoning skills assessed across all three GCSE Maths papers. This module covers collecting, representing, and interpreting statistical data using tables, charts, histograms, cumulative frequency graphs, and box plots; measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and spread (range and interquartile range); scatter diagrams and correlation; basic probability theory including theoretical and experimental probability, sample space diagrams, and Venn diagrams; combined events and the addition and multiplication rules at Higher tier; and conditional probability. Statistics questions frequently appear in contextualised problem-solving scenarios requiring candidates to select appropriate methods and interpret their results critically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — exam entry for both the Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language and the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics is included in the bundle price. Once you are ready to sit your exams, we will help you register with an approved external exam centre near you and guide you through the booking process for both subjects. Exams run in the May/June series each year, with some November availability for Mathematics. Our support team will help you plan your study schedule so that you are well prepared for both exam series.

Yes — the qualifications in this bundle are full Pearson Edexcel GCSEs, awarded on the same 1–9 grading scale and regulated by Ofqual to the same standards as GCSEs taken in schools and colleges. Your certificates will not indicate that you studied online or as a private candidate — they will simply show your grade, the subject name, and the Pearson Edexcel awarding body logo. Universities, employers, professional training providers, and government bodies accept these certificates on exactly the same terms as GCSEs taken through mainstream education.

Studying two GCSEs simultaneously requires good time management and a consistent study routine, but it is entirely achievable with the right support. We recommend dedicating around 5–7 hours per week to each subject, giving a combined weekly commitment of approximately 10–15 hours. Your tutors for each subject will help you structure your learning and pace your progress so that both courses move forward in parallel. Many learners find it motivating to work on both subjects together, as the literacy skills developed in English Language also help with understanding and explaining Maths problems, and the precision of mathematical thinking reinforces clear writing in English.

Grade 4 is the standard pass in GCSE, broadly equivalent to the old grade C under the A*–G system. It meets the minimum entry threshold for most university courses, apprenticeships, and professional training programmes that specify a GCSE pass in English and/or Maths. Grade 5 is the strong pass, broadly equivalent to a high C or low B, and is increasingly used as a higher bar by more competitive university programmes, nursing degrees, and some employer schemes. If you have a specific entry requirement in mind, it is worth checking whether it specifies grade 4 or grade 5 — our tutors will target your preparation accordingly.

You will sit your exams at an approved external exam centre, which may be a local school, further education college, or independent exam centre. We provide guidance on how to find and register with your nearest approved centre. Most approved centres charge a small invigilation fee directly, separate from the Learnirect bundle fee. You will need to sit exams for both subjects, and the papers are scheduled in the May/June series (with some November sittings available for Maths Paper 1). We will help you coordinate your registration for both subjects to ensure you meet all deadlines.

The Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics is offered at two tiers: Foundation (grades 1–5) and Higher (grades 4–9). Your personal tutor will assess your current level when you start the course and advise on the most appropriate tier for your goals. If your aim is a grade 4 standard pass — for example, to meet a university or employer entry requirement — Foundation tier is often the most efficient route. If you need a grade 5 or above, or if you have existing mathematical ability and want to access the full grade range, Higher tier is the better choice. It is possible to change tier during your studies, and we will review your progress regularly to ensure you are on the right pathway.

The Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics is assessed by three papers: Paper 1 is a non-calculator paper (1 hour 30 minutes), and Papers 2 and 3 are calculator papers (1 hour 30 minutes each). You will need a scientific calculator — a Casio fx-83GTX or equivalent is recommended — for Papers 2 and 3. Graphical calculators are not permitted. Your course materials will include guidance on all non-calculator methods and techniques that are assessed on Paper 1, and your tutor will make sure you are equally well prepared for calculator and non-calculator questions.

The Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language (specification code 1EN0) is assessed by two written papers and a spoken language endorsement. Paper 1 (1 hour 45 minutes) covers reading a fiction text and writing a narrative or descriptive piece. Paper 2 (1 hour 45 minutes) covers reading two non-fiction texts from different time periods and writing a transactional text such as a letter, article, or speech. The spoken language endorsement requires you to deliver a spoken presentation; this is assessed as Pass, Merit, or Distinction and is reported separately on your certificate, not numerically included in your grade. There is no coursework or controlled assessment — your entire numerical grade comes from the two written examination papers.

Yes — the bundle is specifically designed for adult learners, including those who found English and/or Maths difficult at school. Our tutors are experienced in working with learners who have anxiety about maths or who left school feeling that they were not a 'natural' writer. The online format allows you to work at your own pace, revisit material as many times as you need, and build confidence before progressing. Formative assessments throughout the course identify areas of weakness early, so your tutor can focus support where it is most needed. Many of our learners are surprised by how much they can achieve with the right teaching approach and dedicated support.

Most learners complete both GCSEs within 12 to 18 months, studying around 10 to 15 hours per week across the two subjects. You have up to 24 months to complete the programme, giving you flexibility if your circumstances change. Some learners who study intensively can be exam-ready within 9 months, while others pace themselves more slowly over the full 18 months. Your tutors will create a personalised study plan for each subject and adjust the pace based on your progress, your target exam series, and any specific entry deadlines you are working towards.

Hear From Our Learners

I needed both GCSE English and Maths to start my nursing degree and had no idea where to begin. The bundle made it so much easier — one enrolment, two tutors, one support team. My maths tutor was incredible at explaining algebra in a way that finally made sense to me, and I passed both exams in the June series. I start my nursing degree in September.

Priya S.

GCSE English Language and Mathematics Bundle (Pearson Edexcel)

I left school at 16 with no qualifications and spent 20 years in hospitality. When I decided to retrain as a teaching assistant and eventually a primary school teacher, I knew I needed to sort out my GCSEs first. The bundle was brilliant — I loved the English Language unit on creative writing and found the statistics module genuinely useful in my day-to-day life. Grade 5 in both. Couldn't be happier.

Gareth O.

GCSE English Language and Mathematics Bundle (Pearson Edexcel)

Studying two GCSEs at once seemed daunting but the tutors were so organised and the learning platform made it easy to switch between subjects. I spent Tuesdays and Thursdays on Maths and Mondays and Wednesdays on English. Having both exams in the same series meant I only had to arrange one visit to the exam centre. Passed with a 5 in English and a 6 in Maths — my university offer is now unconditional.
