About This Course

The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Paramedic Science) is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification, awarded by Skills & Education Group Access and regulated by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). It is the established route for adults who want to enter paramedic science degree study without traditional A-level qualifications.

The diploma is built around the key disciplines that underpin pre-hospital emergency care: Biology (human body systems, cell biology, disease and immunity), Health Science (cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies, mental health, managing challenging behaviour, and professionalism in healthcare), and Psychology and Sociology (understanding health behaviour, social determinants of health, and patient communication). All 16 units are structured to meet the requirements of HCPC-registered paramedic science degree programmes.

The course is delivered entirely online with no campus attendance and no fixed timetable. You submit assignments through our learning platform at your own pace, and your dedicated personal tutor provides detailed feedback on every unit. Most learners complete in 9–12 months while working or managing other commitments.

There are no examinations — assessment is entirely portfolio and coursework-based. Grades of Pass, Merit, or Distinction earned across your units translate directly into the UCAS points needed for paramedic science degree entry.

This Access to Higher Education Diploma is one of more than 20 Access pathways we offer. What You'll Study

All 16 units are drawn from the Skills & Education Group-approved Paramedic Science specification and cover the biology, health science, and professional practice knowledge that paramedic degree programmes require.

16 units totalNo examsPortfolio assessed
01Academic Writing Skills
Ungraded

Build the foundations of university-level writing in preparation for the demands of degree study in paramedic science. You learn how to plan and structure a written response for a specific audience and purpose, and how to apply academic conventions: referencing, argument construction and formal register, consistently across your own work.

02Reading and Note Making
Ungraded

Develop the active reading strategies that distinguish higher education from school-level study. You explore how purpose and context shape the language of academic and professional texts, and master practical note-making techniques that turn dense source material into usable knowledge for essays and clinical study.

03Healthcare Communication
3 credits

Examine how effective communication shapes patient outcomes in pre-hospital and hospital settings. The unit covers the main methods and barriers to communication in healthcare, the analytical importance of interpersonal skills in care delivery, and the legal and ethical dimensions of confidentiality and accurate record keeping.

04Professional Behaviours: Nursing and Health Professionals
3 credits

Investigate what it means to be a registered health professional in the UK, with reference to the standards set by regulatory bodies such as the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The unit examines person-centred care, effective teamworking, risk management, and the value of structured professional reflection in developing a personal development plan.

05Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Healthcare Settings
3 credits

Explore the core concepts of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and the legislative framework that underpins them, including the Equality Act 2010. You evaluate the effectiveness of NHS policies and initiatives in promoting equitable care across diverse patient populations in pre-hospital and clinical environments.

06The Structure and Function of Cells
3 credits

Examine the cell as the fundamental unit of all living organisms. The unit covers cellular structure and organisation, analyses the biochemical activities that sustain cellular function, and traces the stages of the cell cycle, providing the biological grounding essential for the system-specific units that follow.

07Human Musculoskeletal System
3 credits

Study the structure and function of the human skeleton and its associated soft tissues in relation to movement and locomotion. You analyse the physiology of muscle contraction at the molecular level and examine the process of bone development and remodelling, knowledge directly relevant to the assessment of trauma in pre-hospital care.

08Numeracy in a Health Context
3 credits

Apply numerical skills to the clinical calculations that paramedics perform in practice. The unit covers the four rules of number, decimals, fractions and percentages in relation to units of measure, including drug dosage and fluid calculations, and develops the ability to use calculators and estimation strategies to check answers accurately.

09Professionalism and Multidisciplinary Teams
3 credits

Investigate the evolving role of the paramedic within the wider healthcare system. You examine how the scope of practice has changed over time, the regulatory framework governing registration, and the effectiveness of multidisciplinary team working in delivering safe, coordinated care across acute and community settings.

10Endocrine System
3 credits

Analyse how the endocrine system regulates bodily functions through chemical signalling. The unit covers the nature of hormones and their target glands, the mechanisms of homeostasis and negative feedback, and the action of key hormones, including insulin, adrenaline and cortisol, that are clinically significant in emergency care.

11Mental Health
3 credits

Examine the biological, social and environmental factors that influence mental health, and how society responds to individuals experiencing mental ill health. You evaluate different therapeutic and care strategies for mental health disorders, building the awareness and sensitivity expected of paramedics responding to mental health emergencies.

12Respiratory Emergencies
3 credits

Study the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and the conditions that compromise it in an emergency setting. The unit evaluates common respiratory illnesses, the impact of trauma and airway obstruction, and the paramedic's approach to patient assessment and treatment, from initial triage through to the delivery of oxygen therapy and ventilatory support.

13Nervous System
3 credits

Explore the organisation and function of the central and peripheral nervous systems. You examine the structure of neurones, the generation and propagation of nerve impulses, and the principles of synaptic transmission, providing the neurological foundation required to understand altered consciousness and neurological emergencies.

14Cardiovascular Emergencies
3 credits

Analyse the cardiovascular system and the pathological processes that produce life-threatening emergencies. The unit covers the structure and function of the heart and circulation, the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease, and the paramedic's systematic approach to assessing and treating patients experiencing cardiac arrhythmias, chest pain and cardiac arrest.

15Managing Challenging Behaviour
3 credits

Develop the skills and judgement needed to respond safely and professionally to patients displaying challenging behaviour in pre-hospital settings. The unit examines the influence of mental health, substance misuse and other factors on behaviour, and analyses the de-escalation and management strategies available to paramedics working in high-pressure environments.

16Infection and Immunity
3 credits

Examine how the human body defends itself against pathogens and how healthcare professionals contribute to infection control. The unit covers the cause and transmission of bacterial, viral and other pathogens, the body's innate and adaptive immune responses, the role of vaccination in preventing communicable disease, and the mechanism of action of antibiotics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — the Access to HE Diploma is a QAA-regulated Level 3 qualification accepted by UK universities as the standard mature student entry route, and online delivery makes no difference to its recognition. Paramedic science programmes typically specify a combination of Distinction and Merit grades rather than a simple UCAS points total. We recommend contacting your target universities before enrolment to confirm the specific grade conditions required, as these vary between institutions.

Most BSc Paramedic Science programmes require 120–128 UCAS points from an Access to HE Diploma, GCSE Maths and English at grade 4/C or above, and often a GCSE science at the same level. Many programmes also require work experience in a healthcare or emergency services setting — even informal volunteering with St John Ambulance or a first-responder scheme is valuable. Some universities conduct interviews or assessed exercises as part of their selection process. Check individual university admissions pages for precise requirements before you apply.

You need to be aged 19 or over, hold UK residency, and have GCSE Maths and English at grade 4/C or equivalent, or Functional Skills Level 2 in each subject. Relevant first-aid, care, or emergency services experience is valued but not formally required for the Access course. The diploma is designed for adults returning to education, so a significant gap since school is entirely normal. Our admissions team will assess your application holistically and can advise you before you commit.

Most learners complete in 9–12 months, studying around 10–15 hours per week. Because the course is fully self-paced and online, you can work faster or slower depending on your circumstances — the maximum access period is 24 months. There are no fixed term dates, so you can begin at any time of year and build a study schedule that works around your job, family, and other commitments.

No — the Access to HE Diploma (Paramedic Science) is 100% portfolio and coursework assessed. You submit written assignments, case-study responses, and reflective pieces through the online platform and receive detailed written feedback from your personal tutor. There are no timed examinations at any point. Units are graded at Pass, Merit, or Distinction, and these grades directly determine your UCAS tariff points and your competitiveness for paramedic science degree entry.

The Paramedic Science pathway covers three main areas: Biology (cell structure and function, disease and immunity, infection control, the musculoskeletal and endocrine systems, human growth and development), Health Science (cardiovascular emergencies, respiratory emergencies, mental health, managing challenging behaviour, and equality and diversity in healthcare), and Professional Practice (healthcare communication, professional behaviours, and the academic writing and numeracy skills needed for degree-level study). The content is specifically designed to prepare learners for the demands of an HCPC-registered paramedic programme.

The Access to HE Diploma can be paid in full upfront with a pay-in-full discount, or you can spread the cost interest-free with a flexible monthly payment plan from £99 per month. There is no Student Finance scheme for Access to HE through learndirect — you pay learndirect directly, with no credit checks. Once you progress to your full undergraduate degree at a UK university, you can apply for the standard Student Finance package (tuition fee loan and maintenance loan) in the normal way. Our enrolment advisers will walk you through the payment options and confirm the right plan for your circumstances.

You can earn up to 144 UCAS points — equivalent to three A-levels at top grades. The precise total depends on your grade profile across the 16 units: a pass-level profile earns approximately 96–120 points, merit earns 120–132, and distinction earns up to 144. Most paramedic science programmes require around 120 points, meaning a merit profile or above keeps the widest range of universities open to you.

No formal healthcare experience is required to enrol on the Access to HE course. However, for paramedic science degree entry, many universities strongly recommend or require evidence of experience in a health, care, or emergency services setting. Volunteering with St John Ambulance, working as a healthcare assistant, or completing a first-aid qualification can all strengthen your university application. We recommend starting to build this experience alongside your studies if you have not already done so.

Yes — the course is built specifically for adult learners with existing commitments. Everything is delivered online with no fixed lecture times or attendance requirements. You access materials and submit assignments whenever it suits you — evenings, weekends, or during shift breaks. Many of our learners work full time in frontline healthcare, retail, or other sectors while completing this programme. We recommend budgeting around 10–15 hours per week, but this is entirely flexible.

Hear From Our Learners

I’d been working as an emergency medical technician for three years and wanted to qualify as a paramedic but couldn’t afford to stop working. Studying online in the evenings made it possible. The cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies units were genuinely fascinating — directly relevant to what I see on shift. I got my place on a BSc Paramedic Science programme and can’t wait to start.

Connor M.

Access to HE (Paramedic Science)

I’d left school at 16 with no qualifications and had been doing manual work ever since. I decided I wanted to do something that really mattered and set my sights on becoming a paramedic. The biology units were challenging at first but my tutor broke everything down brilliantly. Nineteen months later I’m about to start my paramedic degree. Life-changing is not an exaggeration.

Shaun T.

Access to HE (Paramedic Science)

As a single parent I needed total flexibility. I could study at midnight if that’s when the kids were asleep — and sometimes I did. My tutor was always responsive and the feedback was so specific and helpful. I achieved a Distinction profile and got into my first-choice paramedic science degree. I feel like I’ve given my future self a completely different life.
