The SEG Awards Level 3 Diploma Marine Biology and Ocean Conservation Studies (RQF) is a specialist qualification that takes you inside the science of the world’s ocean systems – from the physical and chemical properties of seawater to the complex biodiversity of coral reefs, deep-sea habitats, and coastal ecosystems. Regulated by Ofqual and awarded by SEG Awards, this diploma sits at Level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework, making it equivalent in demand to an A-Level and suitable for progression to undergraduate study in marine science, environmental biology, or conservation.
The course is structured across seven units, each addressing a distinct dimension of marine science and ocean stewardship. You begin with the principles of ocean science itself – the formation, properties, and circulation patterns of the world’s ocean basins – before moving into the extraordinary biodiversity of marine life. You examine the mechanisms by which marine organisms have adapted to some of the most extreme environments on Earth, from hydrothermal vents to polar seas, and how marine biodiversity has shaped the development of modern medicine. From there, the curriculum turns to the urgent contemporary issue of threats to marine life, covering ocean acidification, plastic pollution, climate-driven temperature change, harmful fishing practices, and the cascading effects these have on fragile marine food webs.
Two units tackle the human relationship with the sea in detail. The aquaculture unit examines the global growth in fish farming, the lifecycle of farmed species such as Atlantic salmon, and the environmental impacts of different aquaculture systems on wild fish stocks and coastal habitats. The marine pollution unit goes further, exploring the sources, transport pathways, and ecological consequences of pollutants from industrial discharge, agricultural run-off, and plastic waste – and the regulatory frameworks designed to control them.
The final units bring conservation to the fore. You study the legislative landscape protecting marine environments at UK and international level, the practical methods used in marine conservation fieldwork, and the range of careers and organisations working to safeguard ocean health. By the end of the diploma, you will have developed a rounded, evidence-based understanding of marine biology and the conservation science needed to protect it – skills equally valued in professional conservation roles, academic progression, and science advocacy.
Assessment is entirely assignment-based with no examinations. Your work is submitted online and assessed by specialist tutors. Full tutor support is included from enrolment through to certification, and the course can be studied at your own pace over a typical period of six to twelve months.
