The Level 3 Award in Farm Animal Studies (RQF) is an Ofqual-regulated qualification awarded by SEG Awards that provides a structured and academically credible foundation in farm animal health, welfare, nutrition, management, and the legislative frameworks that govern livestock keeping in the United Kingdom. It is delivered entirely online through Learnirect's distance learning platform, making it accessible to farmers, agricultural workers, land-based students, and animal enthusiasts across the UK and internationally.
The award is structured around two mandatory units. The first – Farm Animal Health and Welfare – develops a thorough understanding of what constitutes good health in farm animals and how to recognise deviations from it. Learners study the biological indicators of health and disease across major livestock species, including cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry, and examine how to conduct systematic health checks that identify problems before they become serious or economically damaging. Common farm animal diseases are examined in detail: their causative agents, clinical signs, routes of transmission, prevention strategies, and the appropriate point at which veterinary advice should be sought. Farm animal welfare is explored through the lens of the Five Freedoms framework – freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury or disease; freedom to express normal behaviour; and freedom from fear and distress – and learners are required to evaluate how these principles apply in real agricultural settings, including both intensive and extensive systems.
The second unit – Farm Animal Management, Legislation and Welfare – extends this foundation into applied management practice and the regulatory environment within which all farm animal keepers must operate. Nutrition is examined in substantial depth: learners study the nutritional requirements of different farm animal species at different life stages, the composition and quality of common feedstuffs, and the principles of ration formulation and feed management. Accommodation requirements are examined with attention to both welfare-relevant design features and practical management considerations. The unit then addresses the broader legislative framework: the Animal Welfare Act 2006, species-specific welfare regulations, farm assurance scheme requirements, movement records and traceability obligations, and the responsibilities of stockpersons and farm managers under current law. By the end of the award, learners possess both the theoretical understanding and the practical knowledge framework needed to manage farm animals to a high welfare standard in compliance with UK legislation.
Assessment is entirely assignment-based: tutor-marked written work submitted online for each unit. There are no external examinations. Learners have access to a personal tutor throughout. The qualification is listed on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications and carries genuine professional credibility with employers in the agricultural sector.
