The CMI Level 7 Diploma in Leadership Coaching and Mentoring (RQF) is the premier postgraduate-level qualification for senior leaders and experienced professionals seeking to develop and demonstrate coaching and mentoring expertise at the highest level. Awarded by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) — the only chartered professional body for management and leadership in the UK — the Level 7 Diploma sits at master’s degree equivalent level on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and is widely recognised by organisations and professional coaching bodies as a benchmark qualification for strategic-level coaching practice.
The diploma comprises five mandatory units that together provide a comprehensive framework for understanding, establishing, and leading coaching and mentoring at organisational level. Beginning with the strategic relationship between coaching, mentoring, and organisational performance (Unit CMI 7015), the qualification progresses through the construction of organisational coaching policies (Unit CMI 7016), the practical application of coaching and mentoring across the organisation (Unit CMI 7017), the strategic impact of coaching on individual and team development (Unit CMI 7018), and the ethics, standards, and supervision that underpin professional coaching practice (Unit CMI 7019). Together, these units equip learners to operate as authoritative coaching and mentoring leaders at board level and beyond.
Assessment is through written assignments for each unit, including case study analysis, reflective practice reports, and strategic evaluation tasks. There are no timed external examinations. Each assignment is individually marked against CMI assessment criteria by your personal tutor, with detailed feedback provided to support continued development. Assignments draw extensively on learners’ own leadership practice and coaching experience, meaning that the qualification is both professionally enriching and immediately applicable in the workplace.
On completion of the Level 7 Diploma, learners are eligible to apply for CMI Chartered Manager (ChMC) status, the most rigorous and respected professional management credential in the UK, and may also be eligible for Chartered Fellow (FCMI) designation depending on their level of experience. The qualification also supports applications for membership of the Association for Coaching (AC), the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), and the International Coaching Federation (ICF) at senior membership levels.
The CMI Level 7 Diploma in Leadership Coaching and Mentoring is particularly valued in organisations undertaking cultural transformation, talent management initiatives, or the embedding of high-performance coaching cultures. Graduates occupy roles including Head of Coaching, Organisational Development Director, Executive Coach, and Leadership Consultant across private, public, and third-sector organisations.
