About This Course

The Management for Health and Social Care Online Degree Pathway is a two-year online programme that prepares adults working in or entering the health and social care sector for degree-level management study. Delivered fully online through the Learndirect platform, the programme uses assignment-based assessments across 16 units and leads to a UCAS-supported application to a BA or BSc Health and Social Care Management at a UK university partner.

Year 1 covers eight foundational units addressing the principles, policy, and practice of the health and social care sector. Topics include the organisation of health and social care nationally, person-centred practice, public health and health promotion, resource management, contemporary issues in the sector, and supporting positive behaviour in adult care. Year 2 develops management and leadership competencies through eight advanced units: facilitating change in care services, managing workplace communication, conducting a research project, people management, safeguarding leadership, equality and diversity management, health and safety legislation, and personal and professional development.

On completion of both years, learners are supported by Learndirect through a UCAS application to one of its university partners. The pathway is structured to align with undergraduate credit frameworks, giving learners a strong academic foundation and subject-specific knowledge before entering a degree programme. This is part of the Online Degree Pathways portfolio — a suite of degree-progression routes for adult learners who want to reach a bachelor’s degree through a flexible, fully online route.

The programme is particularly well suited to those who are already working in health and social care at a practitioner level and are ready to develop the management, policy, and research skills required for senior leadership roles. Successful progression to a degree opens routes into registered manager positions, NHS team leadership, commissioning, and postgraduate professional qualifications such as the Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care.

What You'll Study

The pathway spans two years of study across 16 units. Year 1 builds knowledge of health and social care policy, practice, and professional development; Year 2 develops management, research, and leadership skills. All units are assessed by written assignment with no timed examinations.

Y1-01Health and Social Care Context and Principles
Year 1

Examine the structure and organisation of health and social care services within a national context, including the roles of the NHS, local authority social care, and the independent and voluntary sectors. The unit introduces the legislative and regulatory frameworks governing adult social care, including the Care Act 2014, and explores the values and ethical principles — dignity, autonomy, person-centredness — that underpin professional practice in the sector.

Y1-02Supporting Individuals in Health and Social Care
Year 1

Develop understanding of the key principles and practices that support individuals to live well and safely in health and social care settings. The unit covers communication strategies for a diverse service user population, person-centred and personalised care approaches, the boundaries of safe practice, and professional conduct standards. You will apply these principles to case-based scenarios representative of adult social care environments.

Y1-03Health and Ill-Health
Year 1

Analyse the concepts of health and ill-health through biomedical, social, and psychological lenses, and examine how socioeconomic determinants such as poverty, housing, and employment influence health outcomes. The unit introduces students to public health data sources and research literature, developing skills in interpreting health statistics and understanding how health inequalities are measured and addressed at a population level.

Y1-04Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care
Year 1

Map the career pathways available within health and social care and develop the skills to plan and manage your own professional growth. The unit introduces continuous professional development (CPD) frameworks, reflective practice models including Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle, and the principles of coaching and mentoring others. You will produce a personal development plan relevant to your current or intended role in the sector.

Y1-05Resource Management in Health and Social Care
Year 1

Explore the practical and strategic dimensions of managing resources in health and social care organisations, including staffing, budgets, equipment, and time. The unit examines how care managers and team leaders prioritise competing demands within constrained resource environments, drawing on commissioning principles and procurement guidance. Case studies from both NHS and independent care sector settings are used throughout.

Y1-06Public Health and Health Promotion
Year 1

Trace the historical development of public health policy in the UK from the Victorian sanitation reforms to modern population health strategies such as Making Every Contact Count (MECC). The unit examines the principles of health promotion as defined by the Ottawa Charter, evaluates current public health challenges including obesity, mental health, and antimicrobial resistance, and considers the role of health and social care workers in promoting community wellbeing.

Y1-07Contemporary Issues in Health and Social Care
Year 1

Investigate the socioeconomic, political, and cultural forces shaping health and social care provision today. The unit examines debates around integrated care systems, the ageing population, digital health technology, and the impact of austerity on service capacity. You will analyse how these issues influence policy development and frontline practice, building the analytical skills needed for evidence-based management decision-making at degree level.

Y1-08Supporting Positive Behaviour in Adult Health and Social Care
Year 1

Examine the theoretical and ethical frameworks underpinning positive behaviour support (PBS) for adults in health and social care settings. The unit addresses the principles of functional assessment, the development of person-centred behaviour support plans, and the legal and ethical requirements around restrictive practice under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and NICE guidance. Applications to dementia care, learning disability, and mental health services are explored.

Y2-01Facilitating Change in Health and Social Care
Year 2

Develop the analytical and leadership skills required to manage change effectively within health and social care organisations. The unit examines the drivers of service change — regulatory requirements, technology, policy reform, and service user feedback — and applies established change management frameworks including Kotter’s 8-Step Model and Lewin’s Force Field Analysis to real-world health and care contexts. You will evaluate a recent change initiative and propose improvements.

Y2-02Managing Communication
Year 2

Analyse the flow of information and knowledge within health and social care organisations, and develop strategies for overcoming communication barriers across multidisciplinary teams. The unit covers formal and informal communication systems, the impact of digital communication tools on workplace culture, and techniques for conducting effective reviews of organisational communication. Practical skills in delivering presentations, writing reports, and facilitating meetings are developed.

Y2-03Research Project
Year 2

Design and carry out an independent research project on a topic of your choice within health and social care management. The unit guides you through formulating a research specification, selecting an appropriate methodology, collecting and analysing data within agreed ethical and procedural parameters, and presenting your findings in a structured report. This unit develops the academic rigour and independence required for degree-level study and evidence-based professional practice.

Y2-04People Management
Year 2

Study the principles and practices of managing people effectively within health and social care organisations. The unit covers organisational structure and culture, approaches to performance management, the management of diversity and inclusion in the workforce, and methods for developing staff through supervision, appraisal, and training. You will apply these frameworks to analyse how a specific team or service manages its human resources and propose development recommendations.

Y2-05Management of Safeguarding for Health and Social Care
Year 2

Develop the knowledge and skills to lead safeguarding practice within a health or social care service. The unit examines statutory safeguarding frameworks under the Care Act 2014 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the responsibilities of Safeguarding Adults Boards, and the manager’s role in reviewing, developing, and implementing safeguarding policies and procedures. Case-based learning develops your ability to respond effectively to complex safeguarding concerns.

Y2-06Leading Organisational Equality and Diversity
Year 2

Examine the legal, strategic, and cultural dimensions of equality and diversity management in health and social care organisations. The unit draws on the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty, and explores how leaders can embed inclusive values in recruitment, service design, and team culture. You will critically evaluate an organisation’s approach to equality and diversity and develop recommendations for improvement.

Y2-07Health and Safety in the Health and Social Care Workplace
Year 2

Analyse how health and safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, is implemented in care settings. The unit covers risk assessment processes, the management of workplace incidents, infection control protocols, and the monitoring and review of health and safety performance. You will examine how health and safety requirements balance regulatory compliance with the dignity and rights of service users.

Y2-08Personal and Professional Development
Year 2

Consolidate your professional identity and plan the next stage of your career development as you prepare for degree-level study and management roles. The unit develops your capacity for self-managed learning through reflective practice, encourages you to take ownership of your continuing professional development, and builds the interpersonal and transferable skills — critical thinking, communication, and self-regulation — that underpin effective leadership in health and social care.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a two-year, fully online programme that prepares adults for degree-level study and management careers in the health and social care sector. Across 16 units, learners build knowledge of health and care policy, safeguarding, public health, resource management, people management, and research methods. All assessment is assignment-based with no timed examinations. On successful completion, Learndirect supports your UCAS application to a BA or BSc Health and Social Care Management at a UK university partner.

Formal qualifications beyond a good standard of written English are not required for this pathway. Experience working or volunteering in health or social care is beneficial as it will enrich your assignments and help you contextualise the academic content, but it is not a mandatory entry condition. The programme is designed for motivated adult learners who are ready to study at an academic level and are committed to progressing to a bachelor’s degree.

Learndirect works with a network of UK university partners that recognise Online Degree Pathway completions as part of the admissions process. Your specific progression options and the partner universities available to you are discussed at enrolment and throughout the pathway with your progression adviser. University entry is subject to each institution’s admissions criteria and available places, and Learndirect provides active UCAS application support to all completing learners.

Year 1 consists of eight units that build a comprehensive understanding of the health and social care landscape: the structure and principles of health and social care, supporting individuals effectively, concepts of health and ill-health, personal and professional development, resource management, public health and health promotion, contemporary issues in the sector, and supporting positive behaviour in adult care. These units develop your ability to analyse policy, apply theory to practice, and produce well-structured academic assignments.

Year 2 shifts from foundational knowledge to applied management and leadership skills. The eight units cover: facilitating organisational change, managing workplace communication, designing and conducting a research project, people management, safeguarding leadership, equality and diversity management, health and safety legislation, and personal and professional development. By the end of Year 2 you will have the analytical, research, and management competencies required for degree-level study and senior roles in the sector.

There are no timed or invigilated examinations on this pathway. Every unit is assessed through a written assignment that you submit online at a time that suits you. Tutors provide detailed feedback on each submission, supporting you to develop your academic writing and critical thinking skills progressively across both years. This assessment approach mirrors the assignment-led model used by many UK universities for health and social care programmes.

Yes — the programme is specifically designed for working adults. Study is entirely online and self-paced, allowing you to work through units and submit assignments around your shift patterns, family commitments, and other responsibilities. Many learners find that their day-to-day work in health or social care directly informs and enriches their assignments, particularly in units on safeguarding, resource management, and supporting individuals. Your tutor can advise on how to connect your professional experience to the academic requirements of each unit.

A BA or BSc in Health and Social Care Management opens routes into a wide range of senior roles, including registered manager of an adult social care service (CQC registered), NHS team leader or ward manager (Band 6–7), service manager within a local authority or independent provider, healthcare commissioning officer within an integrated care board, quality and compliance manager, and learning and development officer. Many postgraduate professional qualifications — including the Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care at Level 5 — also become accessible once you hold a degree.

The Research Project unit requires you to design and carry out an independent piece of research on a topic of your choice within health and social care management. You will formulate a research question, select an appropriate methodology (which may be qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods), gather and analyse data within agreed ethical boundaries, and present your findings in a structured written report. Your tutor supports you through each stage of the process. There is no requirement to conduct primary research with vulnerable groups — many learners base their project on document analysis, service user consultation, or staff surveys within their own workplace.

Hear From Our Learners

I had been a senior care worker for six years and knew I wanted to move into management, but I lacked a degree. The Online Degree Pathway gave me the academic grounding I needed without leaving my job. The safeguarding and people management units were directly relevant to challenges I was facing at work.

Diane C.

Management for Health and Social Care Online Degree Pathway

The research project in Year 2 was the most challenging thing I had done academically, but also the most rewarding. I researched staff communication during handover in a residential care home and the findings genuinely influenced how my team now runs handovers. I am now applying to complete my degree at a university partner.
