Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice of Dental Nursing (qualification number 610/3114/8) is one of the qualifications formally recognised by the GDC for entry to the Dental Care Professionals register. On successful completion you can apply for GDC registration and work as a fully qualified Dental Nurse anywhere in the UK.

The taught theory and the two synoptic MCQ assessments are completed online. The portfolio of evidence must be built from real-world clinical experience in a registered dental practice (minimum 16 hours per week recommended). So while the theory is fully flexible and online, you do need a real placement, we help you find one if needed.

Ideally yes, you’ll need a placement in place to build your portfolio. Most learners enrol while working as a Trainee Dental Nurse, where the qualification is the route to becoming GDC-registered. If you don’t yet have a placement, we offer guidance on finding one and many practices recruit specifically for trainees aiming to complete this diploma.

Most learners complete in 12–18 months. Time depends on how many hours per week you study and how quickly you can build the portfolio in your placement. We include up to 24 months of course access, so you have full breathing room if life gets in the way.

Both are GDC-recognised entry routes to the Dental Care Professionals register. NCFE CACHE is awarded by the UK’s leading specialist health and care awarding organisation, is fully aligned with the new Dental Nurse (GDC 2023) occupational standard, integrates seamlessly with apprenticeships, and is increasingly the preferred route for employers. NEBDN (the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses) is the traditional alternative, both qualifications lead to GDC registration.

You apply for GDC registration and can work as a Dental Nurse anywhere in the UK, NHS or private. Many qualified Dental Nurses go on to specialise in radiography, oral health education, sedation nursing, implant nursing, orthodontic nursing or paediatric and special care. Others move into Treatment Coordinator or Practice Manager roles.

The total cost is £29.99 deposit + £100.58/month × 18 = £1,810.43. Or pay in full for £1,810 and save £459 versus the monthly equivalent. There is no interest, no credit check, and no Student Finance involvement, just a simple interest-free monthly plan paid directly to learndirect.

No, Student Finance (Advanced Learner Loan / Undergraduate Loan) is not available for this Level 3 diploma. You pay monthly directly to learndirect with no interest. Many learners are already employed as Trainee Dental Nurses and complete the diploma alongside paid work.

Yes, that’s the design of the course. The theory is online and unscheduled, the assessment is on-demand, and the portfolio is built from your day-to-day work in the practice. Many learners are already working full-time as Trainee Dental Nurses while completing the diploma.

We offer placement guidance to help you find a GDC-compliant practice. Many dental practices actively recruit trainee dental nurses who are enrolled on this diploma, it’s the established route into the profession. We can advise on how to approach local practices, what to put on your CV, and what to expect from interviews.

Hear From Our Learners

I started as a Trainee Dental Nurse at my local practice and enrolled on the diploma the same week. Doing the theory online around clinic hours worked perfectly, I qualified in 14 months and got my GDC number the month after. My pay jumped almost £6k overnight.

Sophie L.

Dental Nursing Diploma

Career change at 42, I came from retail management and had zero clinical background. The tutor support was the difference. Every time I got stuck on radiography or HTM 01-05 there was someone to email and explain it. Now working in a specialist orthodontic practice.

Marcus W.

Dental Nursing Diploma

I’m a parent of two and couldn’t do a college course around school runs. Studying online in the evenings while working three days a week at the practice was the only way. Honestly thought I’d struggle but the structure made it manageable.
