You identify an author's viewpoint and intended effect, recognise persuasive techniques including rhetorical questions, repetition and emotive language, and analyse how word choice and tone shape the way a text is received, building the analytical reading skills required at Level 2.
Develop the ability to read two or more texts side by side and draw considered comparisons. Practise adapting your writing to fit the task, the reader and the situation. You produce a range of document types including formal letters, emails, reports and articles, selecting an appropriate register and tone for each, and making deliberate choices about content and style so that your writing achieves its intended effect on the audience.
Strengthen the accuracy of your written English at the sentence level. The unit covers the spelling of commonly confused and high-frequency words, the correct use of punctuation including apostrophes, commas and full stops in complex sentences, and the grammatical conventions of standard English, all of which are directly assessed in the Level 2 writing task.
Learn how to give your writing a clear shape that guides the reader from beginning to end. You develop skills in planning and sequencing ideas, using paragraphs to group related content, signposting with topic sentences and linking phrases, and structuring different text types such as reports and discursive essays so that the overall response is coherent and easy to follow.
Build the spoken English skills needed to take an active and effective part in different types of conversation. You practise contributing relevant points, listening and responding to others, adapting your register between formal and informal situations, and using language that is clear and appropriate for the discussion context, as required by the Level 2 speaking and listening assessment.
Develop confidence in presenting information to others in a structured and articulate way. You practise organising your spoken content logically, using appropriate vocabulary and expression for a formal audience, and communicating ideas with sufficient clarity and detail to meet the standard required for the Level 2 speaking and listening component.
Strengthen your ability to listen carefully and respond thoughtfully in real-time spoken exchanges. You practise understanding questions put to you, providing focused and relevant answers, adjusting your language and level of detail in response to what you hear, and managing the back-and-forth of discussion in a way that demonstrates communicative competence at Level 2.
