The TQUK Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (RQF) is the nationally recognised qualification for teaching assistants who want to progress to Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status. Regulated by Ofqual (Qualification Number: 603/1432/1) and awarded by TQUK (Training Qualifications UK), it is approved for 16–19 funding and recognised by schools across England.
The qualification is designed for experienced teaching assistants who are ready to take on greater responsibilities in the classroom — including leading whole-class sessions in the absence of a qualified teacher, planning activities, managing learning groups, supporting pupils with complex SEN needs, and contributing to curriculum planning and assessment. HLTA status is one of the most valued and clearly defined progression routes in the school support staff career structure.
Study is online through our dedicated learning platform across seven mandatory units, combined with a minimum of 100 hours of practical work in a school or educational setting. Assessment includes both written assignments submitted online and practical assessments observed by a qualified assessor — there are no formal exams. The qualification has a Total Qualification Time of 360 hours.
On completing this certificate, you can apply for HLTA-graded roles at NJC pay scales typically in the range of SCP 12–19, translating to FTE salaries of £27,000–£32,000. You can also progress to initial teacher training, a PGCE, or a Level 5 Diploma in Teaching qualification.
