The Preparing to Work in Home Based Childcare CACHE Award Level 3 (RQF) is a specialist qualification awarded by NCFE CACHE, the UK's leading awarding organisation for care, health, and education qualifications and an Ofqual-regulated body. Designed specifically for those who are preparing to enter or are already working in the home-based childcare sector – including aspiring childminders, nannies, and home-based carers – this award provides a focused and authoritative preparation for registration and professional practice.
The award is structured around two comprehensive units. The first unit, Preparing to work as a home based child carer, covers the full range of knowledge required to work safely, legally, and effectively in a home-based childcare environment. Learners study current legislation and regulation relevant to childminders and home-based carers in England, including the Childcare Act 2006 and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework. The unit also addresses how to establish a safe and healthy childcare environment at home, including risk assessment, home safety checks, and the management of outdoor play spaces. Safeguarding and child protection are covered in depth, with reference to current statutory guidance, the role of the local authority designated officer (LADO), and the information-sharing duties that home-based carers carry.
The unit also explores the importance of promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in a home-based setting – recognising that childminders and nannies work with children from a wide range of cultural, linguistic, and family backgrounds. Learners examine how day-to-day care routines contribute to children's physical, emotional, and developmental well-being, and how to work in effective partnership with parents, carers, and other professionals to support each child's individual outcomes. Child development theory is embedded throughout, with reference to expected developmental sequences, milestones, and the value of play in promoting learning across all domains.
The second unit, Preparing to set up a home based childcare business, addresses the practical and regulatory requirements of running a childminding or home-based childcare business in England. Topics include leadership and management of the setting, compliance with financial and taxation requirements – including self-employment, HMRC registration, and record-keeping – business planning, and registration with Ofsted or the relevant regulatory body. This unit gives learners the tools to approach the registration process with confidence and to run a sustainable, compliant, and professionally managed childcare business from the outset.
Assessment is through online coursework and written assignments – there are no external examinations. The qualification is delivered by Learndirect on a fully online, self-paced platform, making it accessible to those with existing caring responsibilities, part-time work commitments, or geographical barriers to classroom-based learning.
