CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership

“This programme is excellent for people like me who work and study in their own free time. The flexibility is genuine – I study around demanding international meetings and travel, and the quality of the content and support is consistently high.”

The Challenge

Mary was a Senior Manager in financial services compliance with fifteen years of experience across Edinburgh-based and London-based firms. She had progressed to a position where strategic leadership was a daily reality – managing cross-functional teams, shaping governance frameworks, and presenting to boards – but she held no formal management qualification. As she worked towards a Director-level appointment, she became aware that peer candidates at other firms often held MBA qualifications or CMI Level 7, and she wanted a credential that reflected the level at which she was already operating. A full-time MBA was not feasible given her travel commitments; a self-paced online programme was the only option that worked.

Why learndirect

Mary chose learndirect for the CMI Level 7 Diploma after considering several providers. “The combination of genuine self-paced flexibility and CMI's reputation was exactly what I needed,” she said. She studies early in the mornings before her working day begins, and in blocks during business trips where evenings are often free. “The portal works perfectly on a laptop in a hotel room. I've submitted assignments from Zurich, Singapore, and a train between Edinburgh and London.” Her employer, a global financial services firm, funds the programme as part of an executive development framework.

The Outcome

Mary is in the final year of her CMI Level 7 Diploma and has already begun preparing her Chartered Manager (ChMgr) application. Her Director-level promotion was confirmed internally four months ago – the CMI Level 7 was cited specifically in the promotion decision as evidence of strategic development commitment. Her Director salary places her in the £80,000–£95,000 range. “The qualification has changed how I think, not just how I present myself,” she said. “It's given me a framework for decisions I was making on instinct – and my decision quality has measurably improved.”
