Jason's Story
“Jake was brilliant — he walked me through every step of the enrolment process and I started my Access to HE Nursing course within the week.”
Jason J. Nkemdirim
Warehouse Supervisor · Coventry, West Midlands
Access to HE Diploma – Nursing Pathway (OCNL)
“Jake was brilliant – he walked me through every step of the enrolment process and I started my Access to HE Nursing course within the week. I wasn't sure I could do academic study after so many years out of education, but my tutor's feedback has made me feel like I really belong here.”
The Challenge
Jason had worked in logistics management for eleven years, progressing to warehouse supervisor at a large distribution centre in Coventry. He had known for several years that he wanted to retrain as a nurse – his mother had been a Band 6 community nurse throughout his childhood and her career had always inspired him – but without A-Levels, every nursing degree he looked at seemed out of reach. He had GCSEs from school but had never studied at sixth form level, and the idea of sitting in a classroom at 34 alongside school leavers felt unrealistic given his shift pattern and family commitments.
Why learndirect
Jason found the learndirect Pathways website while researching Access to HE Nursing courses online and submitted an enquiry late one evening after his shift. Jake, a learndirect enrolment adviser, called him back the following morning and spent over an hour explaining exactly how the Access to HE Diploma worked, which universities in his region accepted it, and what grades he would need to aim for. “He answered every question I had – I came into the call worried it was too complicated, and I came out of it knowing exactly what to do,” Jason said. The online delivery and assignment-based assessment meant he could study in the early hours of the morning before shifts or on weekends, without needing to leave Coventry for any classes.
The Outcome
Jason is currently in the second half of his OCNL Access to HE Diploma (Nursing pathway), targeting Merit and Distinction grades across his units. His tutor has already provided a predicted grade letter for his UCAS application to BNurs programmes at Coventry University and the University of Warwick, both of which have confirmed conditional offers. On qualification, Jason is targeting NHS Band 5 Registered Nurse roles – a starting salary of £29,970 rising to £36,483 – with the aim of specialising in community nursing and following in his mother's career footsteps.
Linda's Story
“I was really panicking about whether I could do this, but Lucas was so reassuring — he helped me see that the Access to HE course was exactly the right path for me.”
Linda Wheatley
Family Support Worker · Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire
Access to HE Diploma – Social Work Pathway (OCNL)
“I was really panicking – I hadn't studied properly since I was 17 and I convinced myself I wasn't clever enough for university. Lucas was amazing. He was calm, patient, and made me realise this was completely achievable. I'm so glad I made that call.”
The Challenge
Linda had worked as a family support worker for Staffordshire County Council for seven years, supporting families with complex needs through early intervention programmes. She had watched newly qualified social workers arrive and recognised that she had more experience and insight than many of them – but she lacked the degree that would allow her to register with Social Work England and take on a qualified social worker role. At 41, the idea of going back to formal study filled her with anxiety. She had left school at 16 with a handful of GCSEs and had never sat an A-Level in her life.
Why learndirect
Linda called learndirect after seeing an Access to HE Nursing advert online – she initially thought Access to HE was only for nursing, and Lucas, her enrolment adviser, explained clearly that there were Social Work pathway options specifically designed for people in her position. “He talked me through it step by step and never once made me feel like I was being silly for not knowing things,” Linda recalled. The fact that there were no exams – just assignments based on real study and reflection – was the detail that finally made her feel the qualification was achievable alongside her full-time job and two teenage children.
The Outcome
Linda is currently completing her OCNL Access to HE Diploma (Social Work pathway) and has received a conditional offer from Keele University for their BA Social Work programme. Her personal statement drew heavily on her seven years of family support work, and the academic writing skills she has developed through her Access to HE assignments gave her confidence in articulating her professional experience. Newly qualified social workers in her local authority start at £34,834 – a significant step up from her current salary – with progression to senior social worker roles at £40,000–£50,000.
Raymond's Story
“The tutors tell you exactly where you've gone wrong and help you correct it — that level of effort and care is what makes the difference when you're learning alone.”
Raymond Okafor
Security Supervisor · Birmingham, West Midlands
Access to HE Diploma – Psychology Pathway (OCNL)
“The tutors are genuinely invested – they tell you exactly where you've gone wrong, help you correct it, and when you resubmit and pass, the feeling is incredible. It shows they're putting in real effort, not just ticking boxes.”
The Challenge
Raymond had spent twelve years in the private security industry, ending up as a supervisor overseeing a team of twenty officers across a retail complex in central Birmingham. He was good at his job, but he had always been fascinated by why people behaved the way they did – particularly in high-stress situations – and had spent his personal reading time consuming popular psychology books for years. At 38, he decided to act on his long-deferred ambition to study psychology formally and aim for a degree. He had GCSEs but no A-Levels and had heard that Access to HE was the route most adult students in his position took.
Why learndirect
Raymond chose learndirect after comparing several online Access to HE providers. “The thing that stood out was that the tutors are actual subject specialists, not just administrators,” he said. After submitting his first assignment – a piece on cognitive psychology that he was convinced was going to fail – the feedback he received was detailed, specific, and constructive. “They told me exactly what was missing, where my argument was weak, and what I needed to add. I rewrote it, submitted again, and got a Merit. That experience taught me more than anything else could have.” The resubmission process – which he had initially seen as a sign of failure – became his most powerful learning tool.
The Outcome
Raymond completed his OCNL Access to HE Diploma (Psychology pathway) with Distinction grades in eight of his twelve graded units – equivalent to over 100 UCAS points – and secured an unconditional offer from Aston University in Birmingham for their BSc Psychology programme. He is studying part-time while continuing his security role, with a career goal of moving into forensic psychology or occupational psychology consulting following postgraduate study. Chartered Psychologists with a forensic specialism earn £45,000–£75,000 in the UK.
