The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting (Q2022) is the recognised entry point to the AAT professional accounting qualification pathway, designed by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) — the UK’s leading professional body for accounting technicians with over 130,000 members worldwide. The Q2022 edition is AAT’s most recently updated qualification framework, reflecting changes in accounting standards, technology, and professional practice.
The certificate comprises four mandatory units that build progressively from the foundations of bookkeeping through to the application of costing techniques and an understanding of the wider business and legal environment. In Introduction to Bookkeeping, you learn to set up bookkeeping systems, process customer and supplier transactions, handle receipts and payments, and post entries into ledger accounts — developing the practical skills that underpin all accounting work. Principles of Bookkeeping Controls extends this by covering control accounts, bank reconciliation, the journal, and the preparation of trial balances, completing the double-entry bookkeeping cycle.
Principles of Costing introduces the management accounting dimension, equipping you to understand cost recording systems, apply cost recording techniques, provide information on actual versus budgeted costs, and use tools and techniques to support cost calculations — skills directly applicable to roles in finance, production, and management reporting. The fourth unit, The Business Environment (Synoptic Assessment), integrates knowledge from across the certificate by examining contract law, the external business environment, corporate social responsibility and ethics, different types of business entity, the finance function, information management, and effective workplace communication. The synoptic nature of this assessment means it tests your ability to apply knowledge from all four units together, mirroring the integrated thinking required in real accounting roles.
Assessment is by AAT’s computer-based assessments (CBAs), which can be booked at AAT-approved test centres or online. These are point-in-time tests rather than ongoing portfolio submissions, and can be sat most weeks of the year, giving you the flexibility to schedule exams when you feel ready. Successful completion of all four unit assessments leads to the award of the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting (Q2022), which is listed on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications and is the gateway qualification to the full AAT accounting pathway.
