About This Course

The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping (Q2022) is an internationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated qualification awarded by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) — the world’s leading professional membership body for accounting technicians, with over 130,000 members across 100 countries. The qualification has been developed under AAT’s 2022 qualification suite (Q2022), reflecting the most current standards in bookkeeping practice, making it directly relevant to today’s employers in accounting, payroll, and finance.

The certificate is structured around two mandatory units. The first unit, Introduction to Bookkeeping, provides the foundational knowledge required to establish and maintain accurate bookkeeping systems. Learners develop a thorough understanding of the double-entry bookkeeping system and its underlying principles, how to distinguish between different types of business transactions, how to process and record customer and supplier transactions correctly across the sales, purchase, and general ledgers, and how to record bank receipts and payments. The unit culminates in the preparation and processing of ledger accounts, equipping learners with a complete picture of how transactions flow through an accounting system from first entry to ledger posting.

The second unit, Principles of Bookkeeping Controls, builds directly on this foundation by introducing the control mechanisms that ensure a bookkeeping system remains accurate and verifiable. Learners develop skills in the use of sales and purchase ledger control accounts to reconcile the ledger with the list of individual balances, bank reconciliation to verify the accuracy of the cash book against bank statements, the use of the journal for correcting errors and posting non-routine entries, and the preparation of trial balances. These skills are central to the day-to-day work of every professional bookkeeper and accounts assistant.

Assessment is through AAT computer-based assessments (CBEs) sat at an approved AAT assessment centre. The qualification is formally recognised by HMRC, Companies House, and the major professional accounting bodies, and provides a clear progression route into the AAT Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping and the wider AAT Accounting pathway.

What You'll Study

Both mandatory units must be passed to achieve the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping. Unit 1 establishes the foundations of double-entry bookkeeping; Unit 2 develops the control and reconciliation skills that keep bookkeeping systems accurate.

01Introduction to Bookkeeping

Develop a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practice of double-entry bookkeeping, beginning with the role and purpose of bookkeeping in business and the distinction between different types of business documents and transactions. You learn how to set up a bookkeeping system, classify transactions as assets, liabilities, income, expenditure, or equity, and record customer transactions accurately across the sales day book, sales returns day book, and sales ledger. The unit covers the parallel process for supplier transactions through the purchase day book, purchase returns day book, and purchase ledger, and addresses the recording of bank receipts and payments in the cash book. You then develop the skills to process all of these transactions into the general ledger accounts using double-entry principles, culminating in a complete working understanding of how financial information moves through a bookkeeping system from source document through to ledger posting. Assessment is through an AAT computer-based assessment (CBE).

02Principles of Bookkeeping Controls

Build on your double-entry foundations by learning to apply the control mechanisms that underpin the accuracy and integrity of a bookkeeping system. The unit begins with sales and purchase ledger control accounts: you learn how to construct these accounts, post the relevant totals, and use them to verify that the individual debtor and creditor balances in the sales and purchase ledgers agree with the control account totals — a key reconciliation skill for all bookkeeping roles. You then develop bank reconciliation skills, comparing the cash book balance with the bank statement, identifying timing differences such as outstanding cheques and uncredited deposits, and preparing a formal reconciliation statement. The journal is introduced as the mechanism for correcting bookkeeping errors and posting non-routine transactions, and you practise identifying and correcting the common classes of error including errors of omission, commission, principle, and original entry. The unit concludes with the extraction and preparation of a trial balance, providing a complete picture of the double-entry system’s accuracy at a given point in time. Assessment is through an AAT computer-based assessment (CBE).

Frequently Asked Questions

It is an entry-level, Ofqual-regulated qualification awarded by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) covering the foundational skills of double-entry bookkeeping. The Q2022 designation indicates it belongs to AAT’s current 2022 qualification suite, reflecting up-to-date standards in bookkeeping practice. The certificate comprises two mandatory units — Introduction to Bookkeeping and Principles of Bookkeeping Controls — each assessed through an AAT computer-based assessment (CBE).

No. The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping is designed as a genuine starting point for learners with no prior bookkeeping or accounting knowledge. Basic numeracy is helpful, but no formal academic qualifications in accounting, mathematics, or finance are required. The course begins with the fundamentals and builds systematically through both units, supported by a personal tutor throughout.

Each unit is assessed through an AAT computer-based assessment (CBE), which must be sat at an approved AAT assessment centre. Assessment centres are located throughout the UK — you can search for your nearest centre on the AAT website. The online study with learndirect prepares you fully for both unit assessments. Assessment booking and any centre fees are managed separately from the course enrolment fee.

The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping (Q2022) is a focused, two-unit qualification covering the core skills of recording and controlling financial transactions — it is the bookkeeping specialist route. The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting is a broader qualification covering additional areas including costing, the business environment, and elements of management accounting alongside bookkeeping. The bookkeeping certificate is the faster route to a bookkeeping-specific credential; the accounting certificate provides a wider foundation for progression across the full AAT accounting pathway.

Yes. The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping is recognised as a valid credential for practising bookkeepers. Once qualified, you can apply for AAT affiliate membership and, after gaining relevant experience, progress towards the AAT Bookkeeper designation, which allows you to hold yourself out as an AAT-licensed bookkeeper. HMRC requires bookkeepers who offer services for reward to comply with anti-money laundering (AML) supervision requirements, which AAT membership helps satisfy. Many AAT Level 2 graduates successfully establish self-employed bookkeeping practices serving local small businesses and sole traders.

The qualification is self-paced in terms of study, but assessment timing depends on your local approved AAT assessment centre. Most learners studying 4–6 hours per week complete the taught content and sit both unit assessments within 3–6 months. The AAT recommends approximately 170 hours of Total Qualification Time for the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping, which includes guided learning, self-study, and assessment preparation. Your personal tutor will help you plan a realistic schedule.

Introduction to Bookkeeping establishes the principles and practice of double-entry bookkeeping. It covers: the purpose of bookkeeping and its role in business; how to set up bookkeeping systems; processing customer transactions through the sales day book, sales returns day book, and sales ledger; processing supplier transactions through the purchase day book, purchase returns day book, and purchase ledger; recording bank receipts and payments; and posting all transactions into the general ledger using double-entry principles. By the end of the unit, you can trace a transaction from source document through to ledger posting.

Principles of Bookkeeping Controls develops the verification and control skills that keep a bookkeeping system accurate. It covers: sales ledger control accounts and their use in reconciling the sales ledger; purchase ledger control accounts and reconciliation of the purchase ledger; bank reconciliation — comparing the cash book with the bank statement and identifying timing differences; the use of the journal for correcting bookkeeping errors and posting non-routine entries; and the extraction and preparation of a trial balance to test the arithmetic accuracy of the double-entry records.

The most direct progression is to the AAT Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping (Q2022), which develops more advanced bookkeeping skills including financial statements for sole traders and partnerships, and further control account and reconciliation work. Alternatively, you can progress to the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting (Q2022), which is a broader qualification covering management accounting, business awareness, and advanced bookkeeping across multiple units. Both qualifications are available through learndirect with full tutor support.

Hear From Our Learners

I'd been doing the books for my husband’s plumbing business for years without any formal training — mostly guessing and hoping for the best. The AAT Level 2 gave me the proper double-entry foundation I was missing. I now understand exactly what I’m doing and why, and I’ve just passed my Introduction to Bookkeeping CBE first time.

AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping (Q2022)

I was working in retail and wanted a career change into finance. The AAT Level 2 was the perfect entry point — no prior knowledge needed, genuinely thorough, and the AAT name carries real weight with employers. I finished both units within four months and landed an accounts assistant role within six weeks of getting my certificate.

Callum B.

AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping (Q2022)

The bank reconciliation and control accounts unit was challenging but incredibly valuable. My tutor was brilliant at breaking down the journal entries and helping me understand where I was going wrong in practice questions. I’m now enrolled on the Level 3 — I can see a clear path towards a proper bookkeeping career.
