Want the full picture before you commit? Read our pillar guide on Functional Skills Maths: levels, routes and GCSE equivalence.

The Functional Skills Maths Level 2 qualification is awarded by TQUK (Training Qualifications UK) and regulated by Ofqual. It is officially equivalent to GCSE Maths grade 4/C and is widely accepted by employers, universities, and further education providers as meeting the numeracy standard at the same level as a GCSE pass.

The course focuses on the practical, real-world application of mathematics — the numerical and analytical skills that matter in the workplace and in everyday life. Content covers three core areas: Using Numbers (whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, proportion, and algebraic reasoning), Measure, Shape and Space (area, perimeter, volume, scale, and geometric problem-solving), and Handling Data (interpreting charts, graphs, tables, and statistics, including probability).

All study is delivered online through video lessons, interactive quizzes, and tutor-marked assignments. You have up to 12 months to complete, with 55 guided learning hours and a marked mock exam included to prepare you for the final online assessment. The exam is taken at home using remote invigilation technology — no exam centre required.

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is a prerequisite for many of the most popular further study routes, including Access to HE Diplomas, Level 3 apprenticeships, NVQ programmes, and job roles in the NHS, teaching, childcare, and public administration. It is the fastest route to a recognised Maths qualification for adult learners in the UK.

What You'll Study

The course is divided into two learning areas covering all three components of the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 assessment: Number and Calculation, and Data, Shape and Algebra.

10 unitsNumber & CalculationData & GeometryOnline exam
01Whole Numbers, Place Value and Rounding

Establish the numerical foundations that every other topic in this qualification builds on. You explore how place value organises the number system, practise the four operations with whole numbers, and apply rounding techniques to produce sensible, contextually appropriate answers in everyday problem-solving situations.

02Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Develop confident working knowledge of three interconnected ways of expressing parts of a whole, and the skills to move fluently between them. You practise operations with fractions and decimals, calculate and apply percentages in realistic contexts such as pay, discounts and tax, and build the understanding needed for higher-level number work throughout the qualification.

03Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change

Explore how ratio and proportion are used to compare quantities and solve practical problems in everyday and workplace contexts. You apply ratio to share amounts and scale quantities, use proportion to solve recipe, map and currency problems, and work with rates of change such as speed and unit pricing, developing a flexible approach to multiplicative reasoning.

04Introduction to Algebra and Formulae

Build a working understanding of algebraic notation and the use of formulae to solve problems. You learn to substitute values into expressions, rearrange simple formulae, and use algebra to represent real-world situations – developing the mathematical literacy needed to interpret and apply formulaic thinking across the Functional Skills assessment.

05Problem Solving with Numbers in Real Contexts

Apply number skills to realistic, multi-step problems drawn from everyday life, work and study. You develop a structured approach to reading problems carefully, selecting the appropriate operations, and checking whether answers are reasonable – building the problem-solving mindset that is central to the Functional Skills Level 2 assessment.

06Applying Calculation Skills to Financial Situations

Develop the practical numeracy skills needed to manage money confidently in personal and professional contexts. You apply percentage, ratio and arithmetic skills to financial scenarios including budgets, wage calculations, interest, VAT and bills, practising the kind of purposeful number work that appears across the Functional Skills Level 2 assessment.

07Area, Perimeter and Volume

Develop the skills to calculate and apply area, perimeter and volume in practical situations, from measuring a room to estimating material quantities. You work with common 2D and 3D shapes, apply the correct formulae accurately, and convert between metric units, building the spatial and numerical fluency tested across the measurement strand of the qualification.

08Measure, Scale and Geometric Reasoning

Develop your ability to interpret and use measurement in scaled and geometric contexts, including maps, plans and technical drawings. You work with scale factors, read and construct scale diagrams, apply geometric properties of angles and shapes, and practise the reasoning skills needed to solve spatial problems confidently in the Functional Skills assessment.

09Interpreting Charts, Graphs, Tables and Statistics

Develop the data literacy to read, interpret and draw conclusions from the statistical information you encounter in everyday life and the workplace. You work with bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, frequency tables and averages, practise extracting key information accurately, and build the critical eye needed to evaluate how data is presented and what it does – or does not – show.

10Probability and Data Analysis

Explore the language and mathematics of probability as tools for understanding likelihood and making informed decisions. You express probabilities as fractions, decimals and percentages, use simple experimental and theoretical probability, and apply basic data analysis skills to interpret results – completing your preparation for the statistics and probability questions on the Functional Skills Level 2 assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is a nationally recognised numeracy qualification regulated by Ofqual and awarded by TQUK. It assesses your ability to apply mathematical skills in practical, real-world situations — in the workplace, in further study, and in everyday life. The qualification covers three areas: Using Numbers (fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra), Measure, Shape and Space (area, perimeter, volume, scale), and Handling Data (charts, graphs, statistics, probability). It is designed for adults who need a recognised Maths qualification for employment, apprenticeships, or further study.

Yes — Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is officially equivalent to GCSE Maths at grade 4 (the old grade C). Ofqual, the qualifications regulator for England, confirms this equivalence. Both qualifications sit at Level 2 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). Employers, universities, and further education providers that specify “GCSE Maths grade C or above” or “GCSE Maths grade 4 or equivalent” accept a Functional Skills Maths Level 2 certificate as meeting that requirement. This applies to NHS jobs, teaching assistant roles, apprenticeship entry, and Access to HE Diploma applications.

Yes — Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is widely accepted by UK employers as equivalent to GCSE Maths grade 4/C. The NHS specifies “Maths GCSE grade C or equivalent” for Band 2–3 clinical roles; local authorities and schools accept it for teaching assistant and support worker positions; and engineering, construction, and finance employers accept it for entry-level and apprenticeship roles. Because the qualification is Ofqual-regulated and listed on the RQF, it carries the same official standing as a GCSE for employment purposes.

Most learners complete the course in 2–6 months, studying around 5–7 hours per week. The course contains 55 guided learning hours, plus assignment and exam preparation time. You have up to 12 months’ access (extendable by six months), so you can pace your study around work, family, and other commitments. Some learners complete in as little as four to six weeks by studying intensively; others prefer a steady pace across several months. There are no fixed start dates, term times, or attendance requirements — you begin immediately upon enrolment.

There are no formal entry requirements. Anyone aged 16 or over with a basic working level of numeracy can enrol. You do not need any existing GCSEs, A-levels, or other qualifications. If you are unsure whether you are at the right level, an initial assessment can help identify any gaps before you start. Most adult learners who did not achieve GCSE Maths grade 4/C at school — or who have not used Maths formally for some years — find this course accessible with consistent practice and tutor support.

Yes — the entire course, including the final exam, is delivered online. All learning materials are accessed through a digital platform that works on any internet-connected device. The final Maths exam is taken from home via remote invigilation technology, so there is no need to travel to an exam centre. You need a computer or tablet with a webcam and reliable internet connection. Study at times that suit you: there are no scheduled lessons, no attendance requirements, and no fixed deadlines until you are ready to sit your exam.

Studying through a private provider like learndirect is not free — fees start from £29 per month. However, free provision may be available through the Adult Education Budget if you are aged 19+, do not already hold a Level 2 Maths qualification, and meet residency and eligibility criteria. Free funded places are typically offered through local further education colleges. Contact your local college or the National Careers Service to check whether you qualify for funded provision in your area. Learndirect’s paid course offers greater flexibility: fully online delivery, remote exams, and flexible start dates not always available through funded college provision.

Yes — universities accept Functional Skills Maths Level 2 as meeting the Maths entry requirement for most undergraduate programmes, particularly when combined with an Access to Higher Education Diploma. Access to HE entry conditions routinely state “GCSE Maths grade 4/C or Functional Skills Maths Level 2,” making this qualification the standard numeracy credential for adult learners on the university pathway. Highly competitive STEM programmes may specify GCSE Maths specifically — confirm entry requirements with your target university’s admissions team before you enrol.

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is set at the same standard as GCSE Maths grade 4/C, but is widely considered more manageable for adult learners because it focuses on applied, practical numeracy rather than abstract academic theory. You are assessed on using numbers in real contexts (budgeting, ratios, percentages), interpreting data and statistics, and solving shape and measurement problems. There is no requirement to prove algebraic manipulation at the level of higher GCSE or to memorise complex geometric proofs. With structured preparation, regular practice, and mock exam feedback, most adult learners pass on their first attempt.

For adults who need a recognised Maths qualification for work, apprenticeships, or further study, Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is almost always the better choice. It is faster to complete (months rather than a full academic year), delivered entirely online with flexible start dates, assessed through a single practical exam rather than multiple theory papers, and accepted by the overwhelming majority of employers and universities as equivalent to GCSE Maths grade 4/C. GCSE Maths may be preferable if you are under 16, if a specific programme (such as medicine, engineering, or physics at a highly competitive institution) explicitly requires GCSE Maths rather than Functional Skills, or if you want the graded 9–1 scale for academic progression. For most adult learners, Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is the most efficient and direct route to the qualification they need.

Hear From Our Learners

I’d always struggled with Maths at school and left without a grade C. When I decided to train as a healthcare assistant at 32, every NHS trust I applied to asked for GCSE Maths grade C or equivalent. The online format meant I could study at my own pace and the tutor always explained things in a way that made sense. Passed first time and started my HCA role three weeks later.

Functional Skills Maths Level 2

I needed Maths Level 2 to start an Access to HE Engineering course but hadn’t done any Maths since school. The course built up from the basics and I never felt lost. The mock exam was really helpful — it showed me exactly what to expect. I completed it in about ten weeks and got straight onto the Access to HE course.

Functional Skills Maths Level 2

I left school in Jamaica and my qualifications weren’t recognised here in the same way. I needed a UK Maths qualification for a finance apprenticeship I’d been offered. The Functional Skills Maths Level 2 course was exactly what I needed — practical, well-structured, and the remote exam meant no stressful exam-hall experience. Got my certificate and started the apprenticeship the following month.
