The Challenge
Leanne had been working in adult residential care in Sunderland for six years, initially as a care worker and then in an informal senior capacity when the team needed cover. She was well-regarded by her manager and the families of residents, but without a formal Level 3 qualification she could not be appointed permanently to the senior care worker role – her employer required the diploma as a minimum qualification for the position. Working night shifts three to four times a week meant that attending a college course was simply not an option.
Why learndirect

Her salary increased from £21,500 to £26,800 – and her manager has already discussed funding the TQUK Level 5 Diploma for her, with a view to progressing to Deputy Manager within three years. “I did this for myself as much as for the job,” she said. “I finally feel like my experience and my qualifications match.”

The Challenge
Karthika had moved from India to Leicester six years earlier and had built up steady experience as a healthcare support worker in a community care setting. She was a valued member of her team and had completed her Care Certificate in her first year, but she had never held a full diploma-level qualification in the UK. Her manager had mentioned more than once that a Level 3 qualification would open the door to a Band 3 NHS Healthcare Assistant post with a higher salary band – but Karthika was uncertain about the process, unsure how UK qualifications worked, and worried about studying in her second language.

She has also been encouraged by her new manager to consider the TQUK Level 5 as the next stage in her career. “This qualification gave me confidence I didn't know I had,” she said. “I know what I'm doing is the right standard, and now I have the paper to show it.”

Monica had been working in adult social care in Bristol for nine years, progressing from a care worker to deputy manager at a residential care home. She was already performing many of the functions of a registered manager – managing rotas, overseeing care planning, handling safeguarding referrals – but without a Level 5 qualification, the care home's owner was reluctant to appoint her formally as Registered Manager. CQC regulations expect registered managers to hold a relevant Level 5 credential, and the absence of a formal qualification was the one thing holding Monica back from the role she had been effectively doing for two years.

She has already begun the CQC registered manager application process with support from her employer. “This qualification is the last piece of the puzzle,” Monica said. “Everything I'm studying, I'm applying directly the next day at work – it doesn't feel like homework, it feels like professional development I'm actually using.”
