Theodora's Story
“The help with registering for my Nursery Level 3 Early Years course was so appreciated — I finally feel like a qualified professional, not just a member of staff.”
Theodora Papadopoulos
Early Years Educator · North London
TQUK Level 3 Early Years Educator
“The help with registering for my Nursery Level 3 Early Years course was very much appreciated – it can feel overwhelming when you're trying to navigate qualifications for the first time, but learndirect made it genuinely simple.”
The Challenge
Theodora had been working at a private nursery in North London for three years after initially starting as a volunteer when her own children were attending the setting. She had built strong relationships with families, shown a natural instinct for early years practice, and was considered one of the nursery's most valued staff members. But she did not hold a DfE-approved Level 3 qualification, which meant she could not formally count in the statutory childcare ratio. The nursery's manager had told her directly: “I want to give you more responsibility, but I need you to have the Level 3 first.” Theodora had always found formal study daunting and wasn't sure where to start.
Why learndirect
Theodora's nursery manager suggested learndirect after another staff member had completed a qualification through them. The enrolment call was, in Theodora's words, “the clearest explanation of a qualification I have ever received” – the adviser walked her through the DfE-approved status, the TQUK awarding body, the EYFS content, and the First Aid co-requirement, leaving her with a complete picture of what she was committing to before she enrolled. “I didn't feel sold to – I felt supported,” she said. The nursery funded the qualification as part of its CPD commitment to staff development.
The Outcome
Theodora completed the TQUK Level 3 Early Years Educator and was formally re-designated as an Early Years Educator, now counting in the nursery's ratio. Her salary increased to £24,500 and she has taken on responsibility for the nursery's observation and assessment documentation – a role that suits her organisational strengths. “I finally feel like a professional, not just a helper,” she said. “This qualification is something I'm genuinely proud of.”
Dipolelo's Story
“The assignment guidelines are clear and informative, and the tutors give you real, specific feedback on how to improve — that's exactly what an online learner needs.”
Dipolelo Mothoagae
Teaching Assistant · Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire
TQUK Level 3 Teaching Assistant Diploma
“The materials are clear and informative, and during the process of writing assignments the tutors give specific, actionable feedback on exactly how to improve. That's what genuine support looks like – not just a grade, but a pathway forward.”
The Challenge
Dipolelo had been working as a teaching assistant in a primary school in Milton Keynes for four years, supporting a Year 4 class and a group of children with additional learning needs. She had built strong relationships with the class teacher and the SENCO, and had naturally taken on more complex responsibilities over time. But without a formal Level 3 qualification, she found she was limited in which schools would consider her for posts and was unable to move onto the school's Teaching Assistant Grade B pay scale. Her headteacher was supportive but clear: the diploma was the next step.
Why learndirect
Dipolelo chose learndirect because the online format allowed her to study in the evenings after her school day – a vital consideration given that school hours left no time for college attendance. What impressed her most was the quality of the assignment guidance and the tutor feedback. “You're not just handed a task and left to get on with it. The guidelines are structured, the marking criteria are explained, and when your tutor comes back to you, they tell you specifically what worked and what didn't.” This approach, she said, felt more genuinely educational than the brief comments she remembered receiving on school essays years before.
The Outcome
Dipolelo passed the TQUK Level 3 Teaching Assistant Diploma and moved onto the Grade B pay scale, increasing her salary to £23,500 pro rata. She is already in conversation with her headteacher about progressing to the TQUK Level 4 HLTA qualification, with a view to taking on whole-class cover responsibilities. “The Level 3 has already changed how my colleagues and the head see me professionally,” she said. “I'm taken more seriously as a practitioner now, and that's directly because of this qualification.”
Frances's Story
“I've used learndirect before and I knew the quality would be there — this course is exactly the investment in myself I knew it would be.”
Frances Johnston
Business Trainer (transitioning to FE Lecturer) · Sheffield, South Yorkshire
TQUK Level 5 Award in Education and Training
“I've used learndirect before for other courses and I knew the quality would be there. The site is easy to navigate, the follow-up was swift, and this course really is a great investment in myself – exactly what I hoped for.”
The Challenge
Frances had spent fifteen years in corporate training and L&D roles for a Sheffield-based financial services firm, designing and delivering staff development programmes. When the company restructured and her role was made redundant at 47, Frances decided to turn the setback into an opportunity: she wanted to move into FE lecturing, where she could teach business and professional skills to adult learners. She had industry expertise and delivery experience, but she needed the formal teaching qualification that FE colleges require of their staff – the Level 5 Award in Education and Training.
Why learndirect
Frances had completed a learndirect course several years earlier for a different professional requirement and knew from that experience that the platform was well-organised and the tutor support genuine. “I didn't need to do a lot of research – I'd seen the quality firsthand. I went straight to the website, found the Level 5 AET, and enrolled within 48 hours.” The microteach element of the qualification suited her well: she was already running business workshops for a local enterprise network during her notice period, giving her a ready-made environment for her observed teaching session.
The Outcome
Frances completed the TQUK Level 5 Award in Education and Training and was appointed as a part-time FE Lecturer in Business at Sheffield College – one of the largest FE colleges in the North of England. She teaches two evenings per week and one Saturday morning, with the option to increase her hours as she builds her teaching portfolio. Her FE lecturing income has supplemented her return to some freelance training work, and she has a clear goal to progress to a full-time lecturer role and then the Level 5 Certificate in Education and Training. “At 47, I feel more excited about my career than I have in years,” she said.
