The CMI Certificate in Principles of Management and Leadership Level 3 (RQF) is the gold-standard entry qualification for first-line managers and team leaders in the UK. Awarded by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) – the only chartered professional body in the UK dedicated exclusively to management and leadership – the certificate confers both a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework and eligibility for Associate Membership (ACMI) of the CMI.
The qualification is built on three mandatory units that together cover the foundational knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for effective management in any sector or organisational context. The first unit, Principles of Management and Leadership, provides a comprehensive introduction to how organisations function, the nature and purpose of the management role, and the evidence-based management and leadership approaches that effective first-line managers draw upon. It also develops the self-awareness and reflective capacity that underpin continued growth as a manager.
The second unit, Principles of Communication in the Workplace, addresses one of the most critical and most frequently underdeveloped skills in management: the ability to communicate with clarity, authority, and purpose across different channels and audiences. Learners study the full communication cycle, plan targeted communications, and learn to evaluate whether their messages are landing effectively – skills that are immediately applicable in team meetings, performance conversations, emails, briefings, and stakeholder engagement.
The third unit, Managing Own Personal and Professional Development, equips learners to take a structured and proactive approach to their own growth as managers. This unit is particularly valued by employers because it produces managers who can self-evaluate, seek feedback effectively, and produce and action a meaningful personal development plan – skills that form the foundation of a continuous improvement mindset.
Together, the three units carry 17 credits and a Total Qualification Time of 170 hours, including 71 hours of guided learning. Assessment is through written assignments marked by CMI-approved assessors – there are no timed examinations. Learners who complete the certificate also gain access to the CMI Management Direct online resource library, an extensive professional development tool used by managers at all levels across thousands of organisations.
