About This Course

The CMI Level 3 Diploma in Principles of Management and Leadership (RQF) is the Chartered Management Institute’s flagship first-line management qualification, designed for those who are either beginning their management career or who have been working as a team leader or supervisor without holding a formal qualification. Awarded by the Chartered Management Institute — the only Chartered professional body in the UK dedicated to raising standards in management and leadership — the diploma is regulated by Ofqual and sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework at Level 3.

The diploma is structured around six core units, each addressing a distinct competency domain that research and employer feedback identifies as fundamental to effective first-line management. The units cover the principles of management and leadership, managing teams to achieve results, workplace communication, equality and diversity, personal and professional development, and managing daily activities to achieve results. Together, these units build a comprehensive toolkit for new and aspiring managers, grounding practical skills in evidence-based management theory.

Assessment is entirely by written assignment — there are no examinations. For each unit, learners produce a written piece of work that typically runs to 1,500–2,500 words, drawing on management theory, organisational examples, and where possible their own workplace experience. Assignments are internally marked and moderated by the awarding body. This approach is deliberately practical: learners who are currently working in a management or team leader role can gather evidence directly from their day-to-day responsibilities, making the qualification feel integrated with, rather than separate from, their professional life.

On successful completion, graduates are eligible for Affiliate membership or Associate Member (ACMI) status with the Chartered Management Institute, the first step on the pathway towards Chartered Manager designation. The qualification maps directly to the CMI Level 5 Diploma for those wishing to continue their professional development, and is recognised by employers across every sector of the economy as evidence of genuine management competence at the first-line level.

What You'll Study

The diploma comprises six mandatory units. Each unit addresses a core management and leadership competency, assessed by written assignment. There are no examinations.

6 core unitsWritten assignmentsCMI awardedNo exams
CMI 301Principles of Management and Leadership
7 credits

This foundation unit establishes the conceptual and practical framework for effective management and leadership at the first-line level. You examine how organisations operate across different structures and sectors, the specific responsibilities and accountabilities of the management role, and the range of management and leadership approaches — from transactional and transformational models to situational and servant leadership — that research has shown to be effective. You also explore the knowledge, skills, and behaviours that characterise effective managers, including emotional intelligence, decision-making under uncertainty, and the ability to balance operational demands with longer-term strategic priorities. The unit draws on established management theory including work by Fayol, Mintzberg, Kotter, and Goleman to provide a rigorous theoretical grounding for the practical skills developed throughout the diploma.

CMI 302Managing a Team to Achieve Results
6 credits

Effective team management is the central operational responsibility of first-line managers, and this unit develops both the knowledge and the practical skills needed to lead a team towards consistently high performance. You examine the role and purpose of teams in organisational life, the characteristics that distinguish high-performing teams from underperforming ones, and the stages of team development as mapped by models including Tuckman’s forming–storming–norming–performing framework. You develop skills in leading, communicating with, and motivating teams, including approaches to recognising and rewarding performance, managing conflict, and giving effective feedback. The unit also addresses the challenge of managing remote and hybrid teams, a core competency for managers in the post-2020 working environment, and covers how to monitor team performance against targets and respond proactively to underperformance.

CMI 304Principles of Communication in the Workplace
5 credits

Communication is the medium through which all management activity is conducted, and this unit builds the theoretical understanding and practical capability that managers need to communicate effectively across every channel and context. You examine the range of communication channels used in contemporary workplaces — written, verbal, digital, visual, and non-verbal — and the types of communication that each channel is best suited to. You study the communication cycle, the principles of active listening, and the common barriers to effective communication and how to overcome them. A significant element of the unit focuses on audience analysis: planning communication for a specific target audience requires understanding their needs, preferences, and level of prior knowledge, and selecting the right combination of content, tone, format, and channel accordingly. You also learn how to measure the effectiveness of your communications and adjust your approach based on feedback and outcomes.

CMI 306Principles of Equality, Diversity and Inclusive Working Practices
6 credits

This unit develops your understanding of the legal and organisational frameworks that govern equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace, and builds the practical skills needed to create and maintain an inclusive team environment. You study the Equality Act 2010 in depth, including the nine protected characteristics, the concept of indirect and direct discrimination, and the positive duty to make reasonable adjustments. The unit covers how organisational policies on equality and diversity translate into day-to-day management practice, including how to conduct fair recruitment processes, challenge unconscious bias, and respond appropriately to incidents of discrimination or harassment. You also examine the business case for diversity, the evidence base showing that diverse and inclusive teams consistently outperform homogenous ones, and how managers can actively promote a culture of inclusion rather than simply avoiding discriminatory practice.

CMI 307Developing the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of Individuals and Teams
5 credits

A key responsibility of any manager is to develop the capability of the people they lead, and this unit equips you with the knowledge and practical tools to identify learning needs, design and facilitate development activities, and evaluate their impact. You examine how individuals learn — drawing on learning styles theory, the 70:20:10 model, and the principles of experiential learning — and how this understanding should shape the development activities you design. The unit covers techniques for conducting needs analyses, including appraisal conversations, skills gap assessments, and observation. You develop skills in coaching and mentoring as developmental approaches distinct from line management, and consider how to create a team culture where continuous learning and improvement are the norm. You also learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of development interventions against agreed objectives and organisational outcomes.

CMI 308Managing Daily Activities to Achieve Results
6 credits

This unit focuses on the practical planning and operational management skills that enable first-line managers to deliver results consistently and reliably. You examine techniques for workload analysis and planning, including how to set SMART objectives, allocate tasks according to individual skills and capacity, and manage competing priorities when resources are constrained. The unit covers delegation: the principles that underpin effective delegation, the common obstacles managers face in delegating (including reluctance to let go of control and lack of confidence in team members), and strategies for delegating in a way that develops team capability while maintaining accountability. You also address time management at the team level, including how to identify and eliminate workflow bottlenecks, manage interruptions, and use planning tools to maintain visibility of team activity and progress towards targets. Risk awareness and contingency planning are integrated throughout.

It is one of the most widely recognised management qualifications in the UK market.

There are no specific academic entry requirements for the CMI Level 3 Diploma. It is open to anyone working in or aspiring to a management or supervisory role. Your personal tutor marks your assignments and provides detailed written feedback. The Certificate is a shorter qualification that provides a focused introduction to key management principles and is suitable for those who want a foundational credential quickly. The Diploma is a more comprehensive qualification that covers a broader range of management competencies and carries greater weight with employers and the CMI’s own membership framework. Most learners who intend to progress in a management career choose the Diploma for its wider coverage and stronger progression value.

Hear From Our Learners

I had been a team leader for two years with no formal qualification to show for it. The CMI Level 3 Diploma changed that completely. My manager was impressed, I got a pay review, and I’m now halfway through the Level 5. The assignment-based format suited me perfectly — I could draw on real situations from work rather than memorising theory for an exam.

Rachel M.

CMI Diploma in Principles of Management and Leadership Level 3

I was nervous about going back to studying after fifteen years out of education. The tutor support was excellent — they really broke down what each assignment needed and gave me clear, honest feedback. I completed all six units in just over a year alongside a full-time job and two kids at home. Absolutely worth the effort.

James H.

CMI Diploma in Principles of Management and Leadership Level 3

The equality and diversity unit alone changed how I approach my role as a supervisor. I had never formally studied management theory before and the depth of content surprised me — it’s genuinely useful, not just box-ticking. CMI membership access to ManagementDirect is an added bonus I still use regularly.
