About This Course

The Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) (RQF) Level 3 is the gold-standard qualification for anyone working as, or aspiring to become, a vocational assessor in England. Awarded by Focus Awards, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, the CAVA is the successor to the legacy A1/A2 and D32/D33 assessor awards and is accepted by all major awarding bodies, including City & Guilds, NCFE CACHE, TQUK, and VTCT.

The certificate is structured around three mandatory units, each addressing a distinct and essential component of the assessor role. The first unit builds a thorough theoretical grounding in the principles and practices of assessment: learners study the concepts of validity, reliability, and currency in assessment evidence, explore the regulatory context governing qualifications, examine a wide range of assessment methods (from direct observation and professional discussion to product evidence and recognition of prior learning), and develop the skills to plan, manage, and quality-assure assessment processes. The second unit addresses the assessment of occupational competence in real work environments, requiring learners to plan assessments, make and justify assessment decisions, provide meaningful feedback to candidates, and maintain accurate records in compliance with awarding body requirements. The third unit covers the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge, and understanding in environments away from the workplace — such as training centres and classrooms — through methods including skills tests, oral questions, and knowledge assignments.

Assessment is entirely portfolio based. Learners gather evidence from their real assessment practice with two or more candidates and are observed directly by a qualified assessor. There are no written examinations. The qualification carries 9 credits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) at Level 3, making it achievable alongside full-time professional work.

The CAVA is universally accepted as the entry qualification for assessor roles across further education, adult learning, the voluntary sector, and all industries that use NVQs or RQF qualifications for workforce development. Holders are also well placed to progress to the Level 4 Award for the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice (IQA), which qualifies practitioners to oversee and standardise assessment practice across a team of assessors.

What You'll Study

All three mandatory units must be completed to achieve 9 credits and be awarded the CAVA. The units cover assessment theory, the assessment of occupational competence in the workplace, and the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge, and understanding in off-the-job settings.

01Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
3 credits

Develop a rigorous theoretical foundation in the principles, concepts, and regulatory requirements that underpin all vocational assessment. This unit examines the functions and purpose of assessment within the qualifications framework, the characteristics that make assessment evidence valid, reliable, sufficient, authentic, and current, and the wide range of assessment methods available to assessors — from direct observation and product evidence to professional discussion, recognition of prior learning, and simulation. You explore how to plan fair, inclusive assessments that meet awarding body requirements, how to involve learners and relevant others in the assessment process, how to make and record defensible assessment decisions, and how quality assurance systems protect the integrity of assessment at unit, centre, and national levels. The legal and good practice requirements relating to equality, diversity, record keeping, and data protection are embedded throughout.

02Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment
3 credits

Apply your assessment knowledge directly to the assessment of real occupational competence in authentic workplace settings. This unit requires you to plan holistic assessments that reflect the natural flow of professional practice, select and justify assessment methods appropriate to each candidate and context, observe and assess performance against nationally recognised standards, and make clear, evidence-based assessment decisions. You will develop the skills to give constructive, developmental feedback that motivates candidates and supports their progression, maintain accurate and auditable assessment records, and meet your obligations under relevant legislation and awarding body requirements. Direct observation by a qualified assessor and professional discussion form the primary assessment methods for this unit, ensuring that your competence as an assessor is verified in a real workplace context.

03Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
3 credits

Extend your assessor skills to environments beyond the immediate workplace — including training centres, classrooms, and simulated work environments — where vocational skills, knowledge, and understanding are assessed through structured methods. This unit covers how to prepare and conduct assessments using skills tests, assignments, oral questioning, and written knowledge tests, how to ensure consistency and standardisation when assessing knowledge-based components, and how to provide valid and reliable evidence of learner achievement. You will develop the ability to adapt assessment approaches for learners with additional needs, maintain comprehensive records, and comply with all awarding body and regulatory requirements for the assessment of vocational skills and knowledge away from the workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) Level 3 is the nationally recognised assessor award for those who assess vocational qualifications in the workplace. It replaced the legacy A1/A2 and D32/D33 assessor awards and is now accepted by all major awarding bodies including City & Guilds, NCFE CACHE, TQUK, and VTCT. It is designed for trainers, supervisors, mentors, and sector professionals who want to formally qualify to assess NVQs, RQF diplomas, and apprenticeship standards.

You need access to at least two candidates in a real workplace setting to gather the portfolio evidence required for the qualification. This can be in your current role as a trainer, supervisor, or manager, or through a formal arrangement with an employer. You do not need to be working exclusively as an assessor — many learners complete the CAVA while continuing in their substantive professional role — but you must be able to assess real candidates in genuine work environments.

Most learners complete the CAVA in 3 to 6 months, studying around 5 to 8 hours per week alongside their professional role. The qualification has a Total Qualification Time of 120 hours, including guided learning and the time spent gathering portfolio evidence in the workplace. Because the course is delivered online and is entirely self-paced, you can progress faster or slower depending on how quickly you can arrange and document assessments with your candidates.

The A1 Award for Assessors — and its predecessor D32/D33 — were the legacy assessor qualifications that were valid prior to the introduction of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The CAVA replaces both of these qualifications and is the current Ofqual-regulated standard for vocational assessors in England. All awarding bodies and most employers now require the CAVA (or the TAQA Award, its equivalent for assessment-only contexts) rather than the older A1 award. Holders of the A1 may still work in some settings, but employers and awarding bodies increasingly request the up-to-date CAVA.

Yes — the CAVA is universally accepted as the entry qualification for assessors by all major UK awarding bodies, including City & Guilds, NCFE CACHE, TQUK, Focus Awards, VTCT, Gateway Qualifications, and Pearson. Once qualified, you can apply to work as an assessor with training providers approved by any of these awarding bodies. Some employers and awarding bodies may also require you to hold occupational competence in the specific sector you are assessing.

You need to be occupationally competent in the specific sector or subject area in which you intend to assess. This means you should hold a relevant qualification at or above the level you are assessing, and/or have substantial, current work experience in the field. For example, to assess hairdressing NVQs you should hold a hairdressing qualification at the relevant level and have recent practical experience. Your occupational competence is verified by your assessor as part of the qualification process and will be reviewed by the awarding body's external quality assurer.

Yes — the taught content and portfolio preparation for the CAVA are delivered entirely online through our learning platform, which you can access 24 hours a day from any device. The practical assessment elements — observing and assessing your own candidates — take place in the workplace, as you must gather evidence from real assessment practice. Your tutor will also conduct observations and professional discussions, some of which may take place remotely via video call.

Once you hold the CAVA, you are qualified to assess competence-based qualifications regulated by Ofqual, including NVQs, RQF diplomas and certificates, and the on-programme assessment elements of apprenticeship standards. You are qualified to assess in any sector in which you hold occupational competence. Common assessment roles include assessing health and social care NVQs, childcare qualifications, construction trades NVQs, hairdressing and beauty therapy qualifications, business administration awards, and customer service qualifications.

The natural progression route from the CAVA is the Level 4 Award for the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice (IQA). The IQA Award qualifies holders to oversee, monitor, standardise, and improve the assessment practice of a team of assessors, and is required for lead assessor, quality assurance manager, and centre approval roles. Many experienced assessors also progress to the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) or the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) to develop their teaching and training skills alongside their assessor competence.

The CAVA and the TAQA (Training, Assessment and Quality Assurance) Award cover similar ground but are structured differently. The TAQA Award for Assessors covers only the assessment of occupational competence and knowledge, while the CAVA is a fuller certificate that also covers the underpinning principles of assessment in a standalone unit. Both are accepted by most awarding bodies as evidence of assessor qualification, but the CAVA is the more widely recognised and comprehensive of the two. When in doubt, check with the specific awarding body you intend to work with.

Hear From Our Learners

I'd been training apprentices in construction for four years without a formal assessor award. The CAVA gave me the theoretical grounding I was missing and the official status to assess on behalf of City & Guilds. My employer sponsored the course and I completed it in under five months alongside my full-time role on site.

Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) Level 3

As a senior nurse, I was already mentoring healthcare assistants through their NVQ Level 2 programmes but hadn't got the formal qualification to assess them. The CAVA sorted that out. The online platform was brilliant for fitting study around shift patterns, and my tutor was incredibly knowledgeable about healthcare assessment contexts.

Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) Level 3

Moving from hairdressing into training was the best career decision I ever made. The CAVA gave me the credentials to assess NVQ candidates in salons and training academies, and I've since picked up the IQA award too. The portfolio approach meant I was gathering evidence from my actual day-to-day work — nothing felt like extra busywork.
