The five questions we receive most about studying vet physio at learndirect – answered directly.

How much does it cost?

From £29.99 deposit + £339.16/month over 36 months (£12,239.75 total), or £12,210 in full – saving £3,047. Currently 20% off the was-price of £15,257.

How long does it take?

You have 36 months of course access. Most learners complete in approximately three years, balancing online theory, 25 practical days, and 800 clinical hours.

What qualification do you gain?

The Level 6 Diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy with Hydrotherapy (RQF) – an Ofqual-regulated, degree-equivalent qualification covering 51 units across three parts.

Is placement included?

The course includes 25 practical training days at a centre. You arrange your own 800-hour clinical mentored placement – learndirect provides guidance and support.

What can you do when you qualify?

Work as a qualified vet physiotherapist in private practice, referral centres, hydrotherapy centres, or mobile practice. Typical earnings: £24,000 entry-level to £55,000+ in established private practice.

About the Course

What is included in the Level 6 Diploma bundle?

The Level 6 Diploma bundles small animal hydrotherapy (Level 3, Part 1) with full veterinary physiotherapy (Level 6, Parts 2 and 3). You study 51 units covering anatomy, hydrotherapy, biomechanics, gait analysis, manual therapy, electrotherapy, clinical reasoning, nutrition, business development, and a capstone research project. Also included: 36 months of online access, tutor support, and 25 practical training days. No prior hydrotherapy qualification is needed – the Level 3 content is in Part 1.

What RQF level is the qualification?

RQF Level 6 – the same level as the final year of an undergraduate honours degree. The full title is the Level 6 Diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy with Hydrotherapy, listed on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

How is study divided between online and in-person?

Theory is 100% online through the learndirect platform, studied at your own pace. In-person elements are: 25 days of practical training and assessment at a centre (booked once preceding units are complete and course fully paid), and 800 hours of clinical placement completed with a mentor in a real vet physio setting.

How many Guided Learning Hours does the course include?

978 Guided Learning Hours (GLH). Total qualification time (including independent study, reflection, and portfolio preparation) is higher. Most learners spend approximately 8–12 hours per week on course-related activity across the three years of access.

How long do I have access to the course?

36 months of online course access from enrolment. All 51 units, materials, and tutor support are available throughout. The 25 practical training days are booked within this period once the required preceding units are complete and the course is fully paid.

Can I defer or take a break from the course?

The course is designed to complete within 36 months. If significant personal or health circumstances interrupt study, contact the learndirect support team early. Planned breaks are inherent in the self-paced model – there is no requirement to study every week, and learners routinely pause and return without a formal deferral.

What is the refund policy?

learndirect offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on enrolment. After 30 days, standard terms apply. For learners on the monthly payment plan, all fees must be settled before certification can be ordered – the monthly plan is a deferred payment arrangement, not a subscription.

About Entry and Study

Are there formal academic entry requirements?

There are no formal academic entry requirements. The Level 3 hydrotherapy content is bundled into Part 1 – no prior hydrotherapy qualification is needed. You must be aged 18 or over, have access to a vet physio setting for 800 clinical hours, reasonable English literacy, internet access, and availability for 25 practical training days.

Do I need a science background?

A science background is helpful but not required. The course begins at Level 3 and builds systematically through Level 6. Many successful learners come from animal care backgrounds – veterinary nursing, animal training, working dog handling – rather than science degrees. Tutor support is available throughout.

Is there an age limit?

You must be aged 18 or over at enrolment. There is no upper age limit. The self-paced online format and 36-month access window suit adult learners managing multiple commitments at any age.

Is support available for learners with a disability?

Yes. Contact learndirect at enrolment to discuss requirements – reasonable adjustments to the online study environment, assessment submissions, and communication formats can be arranged. If a physical disability may affect practical training days, raise this early so appropriate arrangements can be explored.

Can international learners enrol?

The Level 6 Diploma is a UK Ofqual-regulated qualification taught in English. International learners can study the online theory. Practical training days are UK-based. International clinical placements need prior agreement with learndirect. Contact learndirect before enrolling to discuss your situation.

Can I study while working full-time?

Yes – this is the most common study pattern. The online theory is designed for working learners. The main challenge is clinical placement: 800 hours over three years requires around five to six hours per week in a clinical setting. Start looking for a mentor from day one, not when you feel ready.

About Clinical Placement

How do I find a placement setting?

You are responsible for finding your own placement and mentor. The most effective approaches are cold outreach to local qualified vet physiotherapists, networking through your tutor, and approaching hydrotherapy centres or equine practices with on-site vet physio. Most learners contact 8–15 practitioners before finding a suitable mentor. See the full Clinical Placement Guide for outreach scripts and criteria.

Is clinical placement paid or unpaid?

Typically unpaid – you attend as a learner under supervision. Some mentors charge a fee for their time and facility use. learndirect does not cover travel or placement costs. Budget for travel costs from the start of your studies.

What does my mentor need to be qualified in?

Your mentor must be a qualified, actively practising veterinary physiotherapist holding a recognised qualification equivalent or superior to Level 6 RQF. They must provide written feedback on clinical performance, sign timesheets contemporaneously, and actively involve you in clinical work. Your tutor can help assess whether a proposed mentor meets requirements.

How many clinical hours are required?

800 hours of supervised clinical practice. Qualifying activities include direct hands-on treatment under mentor supervision (aim for 500–600 hours), actively engaged observation, written clinical case notes reviewed and signed by mentor, structured case discussions, and reflective writing at the placement setting. See the full Clinical Placement Guide for the complete breakdown.

How soon should I start placement?

Start looking from day one of enrolment – securing a mentor within the first three months is the target. At five to six hours per week, 800 hours takes approximately 2.5–3 years of consistent attendance. Starting late makes on-time completion very difficult within the 36-month access window.

Can placement be equine or small animal?

Both count toward the total. Most learners complete primarily canine placement because small animal practitioners and hydrotherapy centres are more numerous. Equine hours count provided the mentor is a qualified vet physiotherapist. Learners intending to specialise in equine should seek an equine-focused primary placement from the outset.

What counts as a qualifying clinical activity?

Direct treatment under mentor supervision, actively engaged observation with notes and debrief, case notes reviewed and signed by mentor, structured case discussions, and reflective writing completed at the placement setting. Travel, unsupervised admin, home study, and time without mentor sign-off do not count.

About Cost, Finance, and Career

What is the total cost?

Currently 20% off the was-price of £15,257. Pay monthly: £29.99 deposit + £339.16/month × 36 = £12,239.75. Pay in full: £12,210 (saving £3,047).

Is the course eligible for Student Finance?

No. The Level 6 Diploma is not eligible for Student Finance England or equivalent bodies in Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland – Student Finance is only available for registered higher education providers. Explore the in-house payment plan, employer sponsorship, or personal savings instead.

Can an employer sponsor the course?

Yes. Some employers – particularly veterinary groups and hydrotherapy centres – fund or part-fund professional development. learndirect can provide an invoice addressed to your employer and a formal training agreement where needed.

What happens if I miss a monthly payment?

Contact learndirect as soon as you anticipate difficulty. All fees must be settled before certification can be ordered – completing the course early does not release you from remaining monthly payments unless you switch to pay-in-full.

What can I expect to earn as a qualified vet physio?

Entry-level employed: £24,000–£30,000. Experienced private practice: £35,000–£55,000. Mobile self-employed: £45,000–£70,000+. Hydrotherapy centre owners: £50,000–£80,000+. Equine or specialist niches: £45,000–£70,000+. See the Vet Physiotherapist Salary UK guide for a full breakdown.

Do I need a vet referral for every patient?

Yes. Under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 Exemptions Order, written vet referral is legally required before treating any animal. Treating without a referral is a criminal offence. Building strong referral relationships with local vet practices is one of the most important early-career activities in private practice.

Should I join a professional association after qualifying?

Voluntary professional associations exist and membership can benefit CPD, networking, and business credibility. Membership is a professional choice, not a legal requirement. learndirect will point you to current options at the appropriate stage of your studies.
