Yes – HTQ courses at learndirect Pathways are 100% funded through Student Finance England. You pay nothing upfront. A government-backed Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC) covers 100% of your course fees. You may also qualify for a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs. All three years of the Online Degree Pathway – Level 4 (HNC), Level 5 (HND), and the Top-Up Degree – are eligible.
HTQs (Higher Technical Qualifications) carry the same Student Finance entitlement as traditional three-year university degrees. This means you have access to the same tuition fee loans and maintenance support, delivered through the Student Loans Company – exactly as you would if you were studying on campus at a university.
The key difference: studying an HTQ online with learndirect Pathways costs significantly less per year than a traditional university degree (~£6,500–7,200/year vs £9,250/year). That means a smaller total loan, less interest accrued, and faster repayment – while you study 100% flexibly from wherever you are.
How Student Finance Works for HTQs
Four straightforward steps from eligibility check to starting your studies. The whole process is online and typically takes 4–6 weeks.
Use the gov.uk eligibility checker to confirm you qualify. Key criteria: UK residency and no previous full degree at the same level.
Submit your Student Finance application online at gov.uk. You'll need your National Insurance number, course details, and provider information (South Essex College Group).
The SLC reviews your application and sends you a Student Finance Entitlement letter confirming your loan amount. This typically takes 4–6 weeks – apply early to avoid delays.
Once approved, the SLC pays your tuition fees directly to South Essex College Group on your behalf. You enrol, begin your studies, and focus entirely on your qualification.
Pro tip from our advisors: Start your Student Finance application as soon as you receive our LAFIL (Learner's Application Form Information Letter) – the SLC process runs in parallel with your enrolment application. Apply early: applications open each spring for the following academic year, and delays can push back your start date.
What You Can Get from Student Finance
Two types of loan are available to HTQ students – both through the Student Loans Company and both repayable only once your income exceeds £25,000.
Tuition Fee Loan
Covers 100% of your course fees, paid directly to South Essex College Group by the SLC on your behalf. You never handle this money – it goes straight to the provider.
- Covers 100% of tuition – nothing left to pay
- Paid directly by SLC to South Essex College Group
- Available for all 3 years of the Online Degree Pathway
- No impact on credit score
- Repayment begins only when earning >£25,000
Maintenance Loan
Additional funding to help cover living costs – rent, food, travel, and study materials. The amount depends on your household income and where you live.
- Paid directly to you in three instalments per year
- Amount varies based on household income
- Higher rates available for students living in London
- Can be used for any living expense
- Same repayment threshold as Tuition Fee Loan
Maintenance Loan amounts are set by the government each year. Figures shown are 2024–25 academic year maximums. Check current rates at gov.uk/student-finance.
Clear, Fair Repayment Terms
Student Finance is not like a commercial loan. Repayment is income-contingent – meaning you only pay when you can afford to.
Only repay when earning above £25,000
Repayments only start once your annual income exceeds £25,000 – and stop automatically if your income drops below that threshold again.
9% of income above the threshold
You repay 9% of whatever you earn above £25,000 – not 9% of your full salary. If you earn £30,000, you repay 9% of £5,000 = £450/year (£37.50/month).
Wiped after 40 years
Any outstanding balance – however large – is written off 40 years after your repayments begin. Most people will repay their full loan well before this point.
No credit score impact
Student loans do not appear on your credit report and do not affect your ability to obtain a mortgage, credit card, or car finance. They are government-backed, not commercial debt.
Collected via PAYE – automatic
Once you're earning above the threshold, repayments are collected automatically through the PAYE tax system by HMRC – just like National Insurance. You don't need to do anything manually.

Speak with a Course AdvisorHow to Apply to the Student Loans Company
Applying for Student Finance is a straightforward online process. Here's exactly what you need to do:
Create or log in to your Student Finance account
Go to www.gov.uk/apply-online-for-student-finance and create a new account (or log in if you applied before). You'll need a Government Gateway account or register for one.
Complete the online application form
Fill in your personal details, National Insurance number, bank account information, and course details. For the course provider, search for South Essex College Group and select your HTQ course (Level 4 or Level 5).
Apply for both Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan
Within the application, select both the Tuition Fee Loan (to cover your course fees) and the Maintenance Loan (for living costs). You can choose how much Maintenance Loan to take – you don't have to take the maximum.
Provide supporting evidence
You'll be asked to submit identification (passport or birth certificate) and, for Maintenance Loans, evidence of household income. If your parents' income is relevant, they will need to complete a section of the application too.
Receive your Student Finance Entitlement letter
Once the SLC processes your application (typically 4–6 weeks), you'll receive a letter confirming your loan entitlements. Share this with our admissions team – it confirms your funding and allows us to finalise your enrolment.
Begin your studies – SLC pays the college
Once your course starts, the SLC transfers your Tuition Fee Loan directly to South Essex College Group. Your Maintenance Loan is paid in three instalments to your bank account throughout the year.
Apply in parallel with your enrolment. We recommend starting your Student Finance application at the same time as your learndirect Pathways application. The SLC process takes time – and your course start date won't be confirmed until both are complete. Our Course Advisors can send you a LAFIL (Learner's Application Form Information Letter) to speed up your SLC application.

Student Finance Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about funding your HTQ course. Can't find your answer? Speak with our Course Advisors.
Are HTQ courses fully funded through Student Finance?
Yes. HTQ courses at learndirect Pathways are 100% funded through Student Finance England. You can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan that covers 100% of your course fees – nothing is paid upfront. The SLC pays the fees directly to South Essex College Group on your behalf. You may also apply for a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs such as rent, food, and travel.
When do I start repaying my Student Finance loan?
Repayment begins only after you finish your studies and only when your annual income exceeds £25,000. You repay 9% of income above that threshold. If your salary is £30,000, you repay 9% of £5,000 = £450 per year (£37.50/month). Repayments are collected automatically via PAYE – like National Insurance. If your income drops below £25,000 at any point, repayments pause automatically. Any outstanding balance is written off 40 years after repayments begin.
Is the Top-Up Degree (Year 3) also funded by Student Finance?
Yes. All three years of the Online Degree Pathway are eligible for Student Finance – Level 4 (HNC), Level 5 (HND), and the Top-Up Degree at one of our partner universities (OU, Arden, LMU, ARU London, UCLan, Bolton). Each year of study is funded separately by a new application to the Student Loans Company. Your partner university's admissions team and our Progression Office will guide you through the Year 3 application process.
Can I get a Maintenance Loan as an HTQ student?
Yes. HTQ students are eligible for Maintenance Loans from the Student Loans Company, just like traditional university students. The amount depends on your household income and whether you live at home, away from home outside London, or in London. For 2024–25, maximum Maintenance Loans range from approximately £8,000 (living at home) to £13,348 (living in London). Check current rates at gov.uk/student-finance.
What if I have used Student Finance before?
Previous use of Student Finance may affect your eligibility. Generally, you are entitled to receive funding for the full length of your current course, plus one additional year (called a “gift year”). If you have previously studied at degree level, you may not be entitled to a Tuition Fee Loan for an HTQ at Level 4 or 5 – however, there are exceptions, particularly if your previous course was not completed. We strongly recommend checking your eligibility at gov.uk/student-finance/who-qualifies or speaking with one of our Course Advisors before applying.
How long does the Student Finance application take?
The online application itself takes around 30–45 minutes to complete. Processing by the SLC typically takes 4–6 weeks, though this can be longer during peak periods (March–September). You'll receive a Student Finance Entitlement letter confirming your loan amounts once your application is approved. We strongly recommend applying as early as possible – ideally at the same time as your learndirect Pathways course application. Our Course Advisors can send you a LAFIL to help speed up the process.
