Our HTQs are approved against employer-designed standards, ensuring you gain skills that are genuinely valued in the workplace and can help boost your career and future earnings. Each level typically takes 9–12 months to complete.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I progress from an Online Degree Pathway to a full degree?
Yes. The Online Degree Pathways are designed to be stackable. You begin with a Level 4 HNC, advance to a Level 5 HND (which qualifies as an HTQ), and then complete a top-up year at a partner university to achieve a full bachelor's degree. This pathway enables you to enter employment earlier whilst maintaining options for further study.
Who is eligible to apply for the Online Degree Pathway?
These programmes welcome learners from diverse backgrounds, typically requiring applicants to be 18 or older with Level 3 qualifications (such as A-Levels) and GCSE-level English and Maths at grade 4 or above. However, relevant work experience and Recognition of Prior Learning may also be considered for those without traditional academic qualifications. These programmes are particularly suitable for career changers, mature students, and professionals seeking to advance their skills.
What makes Online Degree Pathway study manageable for working adults?
Online Degree Pathways are specifically designed around the needs of busy adults. They offer flexible scheduling where you can access materials and complete assignments at your own pace. The programme follows an 8-unit structure – 2 units per term across 36 weeks of study per year – with planned breaks for summer, the festive season, and other periods. Assessment is portfolio-based (no exams), and South Essex College Group tutors are available throughout to support your progress.
What funding options are available for Online Degree Pathway courses?
These Online Degree Pathway / HTQ programmes are eligible for 100% Student Finance funding, meaning you can access government loans to cover full tuition costs with no upfront payment required. Maintenance loans may also be available for eligible students. Repayment begins only after you complete your studies and when your annual income exceeds £25,000.
All 3 stages – Level 4, Level 5, and the Top-Up Degree – are eligible for the same higher education Student Finance offer through the Student Loans Company (SLC).
How do I apply for a student loan for the Online Degree Pathway?
If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can obtain a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC) to cover your entire course cost. The SLC is a government organisation responsible for providing educational loans and grants to higher education students. You can verify your eligibility using the government's eligibility checker at gov.uk.
To apply, you submit your application directly to the Student Loans Company online. Our Course Advisors are available to support you through this process and provide all the documentation you need. Student Finance applications can take a few weeks, so it's best to start the process as early as possible – we recommend beginning your SLC application at the same time as your course application.
Repayment of the Tuition Fee Loan begins only after you complete your studies and when your annual income exceeds £25,000.
