Understanding Credit Transfer
Your HNC and HND are credit-bearing qualifications. Universities formally recognise these credits, allowing you to skip Years 1 and 2 of a traditional degree programme and enter directly into the final year.
| Qualification stage | Credits earned | Equivalent to | Student Finance funded? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 – Pearson Level 4 HNC | 120 credits | Year 1 of a university degree | Yes – Tuition Fee Loan + Maintenance Loan |
| Year 2 – Pearson Level 5 HND (HTQ) | 120 credits | Year 2 of a university degree | Yes – Tuition Fee Loan + Maintenance Loan |
| Total after HNC + HND | 240 credits | Years 1 and 2 of an honours degree | Both years funded in full |
| Year 3 – Top-up degree at partner university | 120 credits to complete | Final year of an honours degree | Yes – full SLC tuition fee funding |
| Graduation | 360 credits total | Full BA/BSc (Honours) degree | All 3 years eligible for Student Finance |
Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals are recognised by higher education institutions worldwide for undergraduate degree entry, with many universities allowing advanced entry to Year 3 via learning credit transfer arrangements.
Student Finance for All 3 Years
All three stages of the Online Degree Pathway – Level 4, Level 5, and the top-up degree year – are eligible for the same Student Finance as a traditional university degree. Get a government loan for 100% of your tuition fees with nothing to pay upfront.
Level 4 – HNC
SLC FundedTuition Fee Loan covers 100% of your Level 4 HNC fees through the Student Loans Company. Maintenance Loan also available for eligible learners.
Level 5 – HND (HTQ)
SLC FundedYour Level 5 HND – and the HTQ mark it carries – is fully funded through Student Finance England. No break in your loan entitlement between years.
Top-Up Degree
SLC FundedYour final year at a partner university is funded as a standard higher education year. Apply to the SLC for your top-up year tuition fee loan directly with your chosen university.
Repayment only begins after you graduate and your annual income exceeds £25,000. Repayments are income-contingent – you only ever pay back what you can afford. If your income falls below £25,000 at any point, repayments pause automatically. Full Student Finance guide →
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about progressing from an HTQ to a full university degree.
Can I progress from an HTQ to a full university degree?
Yes. Completing a Pearson Level 4 and Level 5 with learndirect Pathways gives you 240 credits. These credits are recognised by our partner universities, allowing you to transfer directly into Year 3 of a full honours degree programme. Upon successful completion of both levels, admission to Year 3 at a partner university is guaranteed.
How many credits do I earn from completing Level 4 and Level 5?
Completing the Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC (120 credits) and Level 5 HND (120 credits) gives you a total of 240 credits. This is equivalent to completing Years 1 and 2 of a traditional honours degree, allowing direct entry into Year 3 at a partner university. The 240-credit total is the recognised threshold for Year 3 admission across all six of our partner universities.
Is the top-up degree year funded by Student Finance?
Yes. All three stages of the Online Degree Pathway – Level 4 (HNC), Level 5 (HND), and the top-up degree year – are eligible for Student Finance England funding through the Student Loans Company (SLC). This includes a Tuition Fee Loan and, where eligible, a Maintenance Loan. Repayment only begins once your annual income exceeds £25,000. Visit the Student Finance page for a full breakdown.
Which universities can I progress to after completing an HND?
learndirect Pathways has progression agreements with UK partner universities: The Open University (fully online), Arden University (online), London Metropolitan University, ARU London (Anglia Ruskin University London campus), UCLan (University of Central Lancashire), and the University of Bolton. Each partner offers a range of top-up degree programmes in business, management, computing, law, and related disciplines. Our Progression Office will help you identify the best fit for your career goals.
Do I have to choose a partner university when I start my HTQ?
No. You do not need to choose your progression university at the start of your studies. learndirect's dedicated Progression Office will work with you throughout your Level 4 and Level 5 studies to identify the right degree programme and university for your career goals. You typically apply to your chosen partner university in the final months of your Level 5 studies. Our progression team handles all the credit transfer administration and application support.
