About Your Computing Degree Pathway

240 credits across Level 4 and Level 5 – an online alternative to Years 1 and 2 at university.

Level 4 – Higher National Certificate: Year 1

The Level 4 provides comprehensive foundational knowledge through eight core units covering programming, networking, database design, security, and professional practice. Students develop competencies through independent research, self-directed learning, guided instruction, and real-world professional scenarios that bridge academic theory with practical application.

This qualification serves as an effective foundation for developing fundamental computing competencies while preparing learners for advanced specialisation at Level 5.

Level 5 – Higher National Diploma: Year 2

The Level 5 builds upon Level 4 foundations, enabling students to explore computing concepts with greater depth and complexity through seven advanced units. The curriculum emphasises critical evaluation, independent research, and synthesis of knowledge across computing disciplines.

Students engage with advanced practical applications and complex problem-solving scenarios preparing them for senior technical roles or progression to degree-level study.

What is an HTQ?

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are Level 4 and 5 technical qualifications developed in collaboration with employers and approved by Skills England. They are based on the same employer-developed occupational standards as apprenticeships but do not require employment, making them accessible to school leavers aged 18+ and professionals looking to retrain or upskill.

Pearson qualifications are recognised by all Russell Group universities including Oxford and Cambridge, plus prestigious US institutions such as Columbia and Yale.
