Chartered Manager (ChMgr) is the highest status awarded by the Chartered Management Institute and is the most recognised professional management designation in the UK. To achieve ChMgr status, you must: (1) hold a CMI Level 7 qualification (Certificate or Diploma), (2) hold current CMI membership, and (3) complete the CMI's professional review process, which involves submitting a portfolio of evidence demonstrating management competence across CMI's Management and Leadership Standard. Once awarded, you can use the post-nominal letters ChMgr. CMI membership and annual review maintain the designation. Many employers – particularly in the public sector, NHS, and financial services – actively encourage or require Chartered Manager status for senior management and Director-level appointments.

Both the Certificate and Diploma are awarded at the same Level (5 or 7) and by the same awarding body (CMI). The key difference is breadth and depth. A Certificate typically covers 3–4 units (approximately 60 credits) and focuses on core management or strategic competencies. A Diploma covers a broader range of units (typically 6–10 units, 120–180 credits) and develops a more comprehensive management toolkit. For Chartered Manager applications, the Diploma provides stronger supporting evidence because it covers more of the CMI Management and Leadership Standard. A CMI Level 7 Diploma is a Level 7 qualification on the RQF – the same level as a master's degree. Unlike an MBA, which is a university degree, a CMI Level 7 is an awarding body qualification, which means it is focused on practical management competence rather than academic theory. In many UK contexts – particularly the public sector, NHS management, and operational businesses – a CMI Level 7 with Chartered Manager status is viewed as equivalent or superior to a mid-tier MBA, and at a significantly lower cost and time investment. For roles in management consulting, investment banking, or academic research, an MBA from a Russell Group or top business school carries more specific weight.

Yes – CMI qualifications at Level 5 and Level 7 require you to have current or recent management experience because the assignments require you to draw on real management situations. CMI Level 5 typically requires at least 2 years of people management or team leadership experience. CMI Level 7 typically requires at least 5 years of management experience, with a significant element at senior or strategic level. Level 5 is not a formal prerequisite for Level 7 – you can go directly to CMI Level 7 if your management experience and background support study at a strategic level. Many learners with 8 or more years of management experience start directly at Level 7. However, learners who have limited formal management education or who are transitioning from technical roles into management sometimes benefit from beginning at Level 5 to build foundational management knowledge before progressing to the strategic focus of Level 7.
