Erin's Story
“The experience was great and very easy to navigate — I completed the qualification and felt genuinely supported the whole way through.”
Erin Evans
Healthcare Assistant (progressing to Nursing) · Cardiff, Wales
Functional Skills Maths – Level 2
“Great experience – very easy to navigate your learning and complete a qualification. I never felt lost or unsupported, and passing meant I could finally move forward with the plans I'd been putting off for two years.”
The Challenge
Erin had been working as a Healthcare Assistant in a Cardiff NHS ward for two years and was preparing to apply for the Access to HE Nursing diploma as her route to a nursing degree. She had GCSE English at grade 5 but her GCSE Maths was a grade 3 – below the threshold required by the Access to HE programme she wanted to join. Rather than wait another academic year or attempt a full GCSE resit, she looked into the Functional Skills Level 2 Maths alternative, which her target Access to HE provider confirmed would meet the entry requirement.
Why learndirect
Erin needed to complete the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 in time for the Access to HE enrolment window – a timeline of roughly twelve weeks. She chose learndirect because the portal and the process were clear from the moment she enquired. “Everything was exactly where it should be,” she said. “The study materials, the practice tests, the booking information for the exam – it was all logical and well-organised.” Her tutor helped her identify the specific Maths areas that needed the most preparation (ratio and proportion, statistical calculations) and concentrated her limited revision time on those topics rather than reviewing everything equally.
The Outcome
Erin passed Functional Skills Maths Level 2 within ten weeks of enrolling and met the entry requirement for the Access to HE Nursing pathway – which she started the following month. “Two years of feeling stuck because of one grade, and ten weeks of focused study changed it,” she said. She is now progressing through her Access to HE Diploma with the goal of applying to Cardiff Metropolitan University for their BNurs programme. NHS Band 5 Registered Nurse starting salary in Wales is £29,970 – the outcome Erin is working towards.
Alfie's Story
“Chris walked me through every single step of signing up — taking my maths and English again felt manageable for the first time ever.”
Alfie Ashford
Apprentice Electrician · Plymouth, Devon
Functional Skills Maths and English – Level 2
“Chris on the phone was brilliant – he walked me through every step of signing up to take my maths and English again. I've dreaded this for years and he made it feel completely doable.”
The Challenge
Alfie had left school at 16 with grade 3 in GCSE Maths and grade 4 in GCSE English – one mark below the grade 4 threshold in Maths that his electrical apprenticeship training provider required. He had been turned down for two apprenticeship programmes because of this gap, and the prospect of resitting a full GCSE felt overwhelming. He had genuinely disliked Maths at school and associated formal assessment with failure. At 19, working as a labourer on construction sites and trying to break into a skilled electrical trade, the Functional Skills Level 2 route was presented to him by an apprenticeship provider as the recognised alternative.
Why learndirect
Alfie called learndirect after finding them through a search for Functional Skills providers. Chris, the enrolment adviser, spent time with him on the phone explaining the difference between the full GCSE and Functional Skills, confirming that the Level 2 qualification was fully accepted by his target apprenticeship provider, and walking him through the online study and exam process step by step. “He didn't rush me or use language I didn't understand. He was just really clear and straightforward,” Alfie said. The tutor-supported online preparation model gave him the ability to work through Maths topics he had genuinely never understood before, at his own pace, without the anxiety of a classroom.
The Outcome
Alfie passed Functional Skills Maths Level 2 on his second sitting and Functional Skills English Level 2 on his first. He was offered a Level 3 Electrical Installation Apprenticeship with a Plymouth-based contractor within three months of completing both qualifications – the exact outcome that the Functional Skills journey had been pointing towards. As a qualified Electrician on completion of his apprenticeship, Alfie can expect to earn £30,000–£45,000 in the South West, with significant upside for self-employment. “I feel like I've finally got past the thing that was holding me back,” he said.
Chris's Story
“learndirect is a genuinely great resource — it trained my mind to structure my thoughts properly and helped me work out what I actually want to study next.”
Christopher Cavendish
Community Support Worker · Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
Functional Skills English and Maths – Level 2
“learndirect is a truly great resource of inspiration. It really does train your mind to structure your thoughts properly – and it helped me understand what I actually want to study next and why. That clarity is invaluable.”
The Challenge
Christopher had been out of formal education for over a decade when he started working as a community support worker in Nottingham at 32. His role involved a mix of administrative tasks, client communication, and practical support work – all areas where he felt confident. But when his line manager mentioned that a Level 3 Care qualification would be required for the senior support worker role he was eyeing, Christopher realised he would first need to meet the Level 2 English and Maths entry requirement he had never formally achieved. The combination of a long gap from education and a general lack of confidence in academic settings had always made him postpone this step.
Why learndirect
Christopher had come across learndirect while browsing for care qualifications and noticed the Functional Skills section. “What I liked was that it didn't feel like a test prep factory – it felt like actual learning,” he said. He found that working through the English Functional Skills materials in particular changed how he read and wrote in his daily work. “It's not just about passing an exam. It trains you to structure your thinking. I started writing better case notes, better emails – my manager actually commented on it.” The maths preparation, which he had expected to dread, turned out to be genuinely engaging when framed in practical, applied contexts rather than abstract problems.
The Outcome
Christopher passed both Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications and enrolled on the TQUK Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care at learndirect – the natural next step in his qualification journey. “learndirect didn't just give me a certificate – it gave me the confidence and the intellectual tools to carry on,” he said. His goal is to complete the Level 3 Diploma and progress to a senior support worker role within 18 months, targeting a salary of £25,000–£27,000 in Nottinghamshire's growing adult care sector.
