Level 4 – Higher National Certificate: Year 1

The Level 4 HNC builds essential foundations across eight core units covering law, ethics, professional values, evidence-based practice, health education, applied anatomy and physiology, and participatory action research. Level 5 – Higher National Diploma: Year 2

What is an HTQ?

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are Level 4 and 5 technical qualifications developed in collaboration with employers and approved by Skills England. They are based on the same employer-developed occupational standards as apprenticeships but do not require employment, making them accessible to school leavers aged 18+ and professionals looking to retrain or upskill.

This qualification is aligned to the Healthcare Assistant Practitioner occupational standard, ensuring it is recognised and valued by NHS trusts, primary care providers, and private healthcare employers across England.

You need a Level 3 qualification – this includes A-Levels, an Access to Higher Education Diploma, BTEC Level 3, or other equivalent Level 3 qualifications. You also need Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths (or GCSE grade 4 or above). For international applicants, English language requirements include IELTS 6+, CEFR B2, Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) 162+, or Pearson PTE Academic 42–49.

This HTQ programme qualifies for 100% Student Finance funding through the Student Loans Company (SLC). You pay nothing upfront. The SLC transfers funds directly to South Essex College Group on your behalf. Repayment starts only after you graduate and your annual income exceeds £25,000. You may also be eligible for maintenance loans.

No external exams. The curriculum uses a portfolio approach to continuous assessment. You study modules and build a portfolio of evidence, with formative feedback provided at milestones throughout each module. You then make a final portfolio submission at the end of each unit. All assessment is coursework-based.

Each level (4 and 5) typically takes 9–12 months to complete, with 8 units delivered across 36 weeks of study (approximately 9 weeks per unit). The full two-level pathway (HNC + HND) is therefore approximately 18–24 months in total before you progress to the degree top-up year.

However, if you are currently working in healthcare, the portfolio assessment allows you to draw on real workplace experience.
