Who Delivers Your HTQ?
Your HTQ is delivered through a three-institution partnership: learndirect provides the online learning platform and learner support, South Essex College Group (SECG) provides academic delivery and named tutors, and Pearson awards the qualification.
learndirect is one of the UK's largest and most experienced distance learning providers, having supported over 4.5 million learners throughout its history. South Essex College Group (SECG) is an Ofsted Good-rated further and higher education provider that holds the academic licence and delivers the curriculum. Pearson is the world's largest education company and the awarding body for the Pearson BTEC qualifications – the HNC and HND – that make up the HTQ.
The partnership model means you benefit from best-in-class expertise at every point of your journey: the flexibility and technology of a specialist online provider, the academic rigour and qualification expertise of a regulated college, and the global credibility of the world's leading qualification awarding body. The programme holds the HTQ Quality Mark from Skills England, confirming it meets the national standard for employer-designed technical education.

How the Partnership Works During Your Studies
From your first enquiry to your final assessment – here is how you interact with each of the three partners throughout your HTQ journey.
Your first point of contact is learndirect. The learndirect team handles all enquiries, application processing, Student Finance England guidance, and enrolment documentation. Once enrolled, you receive access to the learndirect online learning platform and your course materials are available immediately. learndirect advisers are available throughout to help with any administrative, financial, or welfare queries.
All course content, reading materials, video lectures, and formative exercises are accessed through the learndirect online platform. You study at your own pace – the platform is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Progress tracking, submission portals, and feedback tools are all integrated within the platform, so your full learning journey is visible in one place.
Academic support is provided by named tutors from South Essex College Group. Your tutor is your primary point of contact for questions about course content, assignment feedback, and academic guidance. South Essex College Group (SECG) tutors bring practitioner expertise in your chosen pathway – whether Leadership & Management, Digital Technologies, or Computing – combined with formal higher education teaching qualifications and experience of Pearson BTEC assessment standards.
Assignments are marked by South Essex College Group (SECG) assessors and internally verified by South Essex College Group (SECG)'s quality team. Pearson conducts external verification as the awarding body, ensuring all assessments meet the national qualification standards. Once you have completed all units and passed your assignments, Pearson issues your Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC or Level 5 HND certificate directly – this is the internationally recognised credential that appears on your professional profile.
When you are ready to progress to a degree top-up at a partner university, both learndirect and South Essex College Group (SECG) staff support the transition. South Essex College Group (SECG) tutors provide academic references and progression guidance; learndirect advisers help with Student Finance England applications for Year 3. The partner universities – the Open University, Arden University, LMU London, ARU London, UCLan London, and the University of Bolton – each have their own admissions teams who process your Year 3 application under the progression agreement.
Quality Standards and Assurance
The HTQ programme is subject to multiple layers of independent quality assurance – from the UK government's technical education body to Ofsted and Pearson's own external verification processes.
HTQ Quality Mark – Skills England
The HTQ Quality Mark is awarded by Skills England (the government body responsible for technical education in England) to qualifications that are employer-designed, mapped to specific occupational standards, and meet the national criteria for Higher Technical Qualifications. The HTQ programme holds this Quality Mark across all three subject pathways, confirming it has been independently assessed as meeting national standards for employer relevance and technical rigour.
Ofsted Good Rating – South Essex College Group (SECG)
South Essex College Group holds an Ofsted Good rating. Ofsted is the UK's education and skills inspection body and its ratings are the standard measure of quality in further and higher education. A Good rating confirms that South Essex College Group (SECG)'s teaching quality, assessment practices, learner support, and management meet the required standard. Ofsted inspections are rigorous, unannounced, and conducted against a national framework – a Good rating is not simply a baseline; it reflects genuinely strong provision.
Pearson BTEC Qualification Standards
Pearson BTEC qualifications are regulated by Ofqual (the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) and sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). Level 4 equates to the first year of a bachelor's degree; Level 5 equates to the second year. Pearson's external verification process ensures that South Essex College Group (SECG)'s marking and assessment decisions are consistent with national standards across all centres delivering the same qualification.
learndirect Quality Framework
learndirect operates under its own quality management framework for online learning delivery, covering platform reliability, learner experience standards, support response times, and data security. learndirect is registered with the relevant regulatory and funding bodies and undergoes regular compliance reviews. Its quality processes are designed to ensure that the online learning experience meets the same expectations as campus-based delivery in terms of content currency, tutor responsiveness, and learner outcomes.
