Alex: Hello and welcome back to The Study Podcast. Today Sam and I are looking at AI ethics and the responsible use of artificial intelligence, which is one of the most important and complex topics in this unit. Sam, this is where the qualification asks learners to think beyond the technical.

Sam: And rightly so. The technical skills of building and improving AI systems are necessary but not sufficient for being a responsible AI practitioner. The systems being built have real effects on real people, and those effects can be harmful in ways that are not always obvious from the technical perspective.

Alex: Let's start with algorithmic bias, because it's perhaps the best-documented type of AI harm.

Sam: Algorithmic bias arises when an AI system produces outputs that systematically discriminate against certain groups of people. The most common cause is biased training data: if a facial recognition system is trained predominantly on images of white faces, it will be less accurate on darker-skinned faces, because it has learned less from those examples. If a hiring algorithm is trained on historical hiring decisions that reflected human bias against women in certain roles, it will learn to replicate those biases. The harm is compounded because people often trust algorithmic decisions more than human ones, assuming that computers are objective.

Alex: There have been high-profile cases of this, haven't there?

Sam: Several significant ones. Amazon built a CV screening tool that penalised CVs containing words associated with women, because the historical hiring data it was trained on reflected gender bias in past hiring decisions. They abandoned it when the bias was discovered. The US criminal justice system has used risk assessment tools to inform bail and sentencing decisions that have been shown to systematically overestimate the risk posed by Black defendants. Facial recognition systems used by law enforcement have shown significantly higher error rates for darker-skinned faces, leading to wrongful identifications.

Alex: What does explainability mean in AI and why does it matter?

Sam: Explainability refers to the ability to understand and explain why an AI system made a specific decision. Many modern deep learning systems are essentially black boxes: they produce outputs but don't provide insight into why. This is acceptable for low-stakes applications like film recommendations, but becomes a serious problem for high-stakes decisions like loan applications, medical diagnoses and criminal risk assessment. If a person is denied credit or detained by a system they can't understand or challenge, that's a fundamental issue of fairness and accountability. The UK GDPR includes a right to explanation for automated decisions, which has legal implications for AI practitioners.

Alex: What does responsible AI governance look like in practice?

Sam: It starts with recognising that building AI systems confers responsibility for their effects. In practice it means: conducting systematic bias testing before and after deployment; documenting the limitations and appropriate use cases of a model clearly; involving diverse teams and affected communities in the design process; establishing ongoing monitoring for harmful outcomes; providing mechanisms for people affected by AI decisions to understand and contest them; and ensuring there is genuine human oversight for high-stakes decisions rather than treating algorithmic outputs as final. None of this is simple or cheap, but it's essential for AI that can be trusted.
