Alex: Hello and welcome back to The Study Podcast. Today we're looking at how to evaluate test outcomes and use them to improve quality assurance. Sam, evaluation is the step that turns testing from a pass or fail exercise into a genuine learning process.

Sam: Absolutely. Testing produces a lot of data: test results, defect records, coverage metrics, time spent. The value comes from analysing that data to understand what it tells you about the quality of the system and the effectiveness of the testing process, not just from having the data.

Alex: What are the main things you're looking for when you evaluate test outcomes?

Sam: Several things. Defect distribution: where did the defects cluster? If a large proportion of defects are concentrated in one module or one team's work, that tells you something important about where additional attention is needed. Defect trends over time: is the defect discovery rate declining as testing progresses, which would suggest the defect population is being exhausted, or is it staying high or increasing, which might suggest that fixes are introducing new defects? Severity distribution: what's the ratio of high-severity to low-severity defects? A large tail of low-severity issues with no critical ones is a very different quality picture from one critical issue and very few minor ones.

Alex: How do you measure test coverage?

Sam: Coverage can be measured at several levels. Requirement coverage measures what proportion of the specified requirements have been exercised by at least one test case. Code coverage measures what proportion of the code lines, branches or paths have been executed during testing. Risk coverage measures how thoroughly the identified risks have been tested. Each measure has blind spots: high code coverage doesn't mean all the important behaviours have been tested, and full requirement coverage doesn't mean all the risks have been addressed. Using multiple coverage measures together gives a more complete picture.

Alex: And root cause analysis of defects. How important is that?

Sam: Extremely important but often neglected under time pressure. Root cause analysis asks: not just what was the bug in the code, but why was the bug introduced in the first place? Was it a misunderstanding of the requirements? A coding mistake due to insufficient review? A design flaw that should have been caught earlier? Different root causes imply different process improvements. If many defects stem from requirements misunderstandings, the solution lies in requirements engineering, not in more testing. Root cause analysis is how you break the cycle of finding the same types of defect in every project.

Alex: How do you communicate test results to different audiences?

Sam: Technical team members need detailed defect information and coverage data. Project managers need a clear summary of quality status, open defects by severity, and an evidence-based assessment of readiness for release. Senior stakeholders need to understand the risk picture: what is and isn't well tested, what residual risks remain and what the recommendation is for whether to proceed with release. Each audience needs the information presented at the right level of abstraction for the decisions they need to make.
